New Delhi - An Indian court on Friday sentenced life imprisonment to a man accused of raping a Spanish woman at knife-point in her Mumbai apartment, news reports said.

The woman, a 27-year-old musician who is now based in Germany, was attacked by a burglar who broke into her apartment in November 2012.

Mumbai police arrested Mohammad Ansari the next day. A Mumbai court convicted him of rape, sodomy, criminal intimidation and theft, NDTV news reported. The victim gave evidence by videoconference from Berlin. She had come to Mumbai to learn Indian classical music, and left for Germany soon after the incident.

Rape trials, which can take years in India, have been fast-tracked after public outrage over the gang rape of a 23-year-old woman, who later died from her injuries, in New Delhi in December 2012.
