New Delhi -The director of a private boarding school in eastern India was beaten to death by villagers who accused teachers of killing two students, police said on Monday.

Residents of a village in Bihar state's Nalanda district attacked Devendra Prasad Sinha on Sunday after the bodies of two students aged between 7 and 8 were found in a canal.

The villagers also vandalised school property and burnt a vehicle.

"Sinha succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Witnesses say he was kicked and beaten with sticks. A post-mortem examination is being carried out to ascertain the exact cause of the death," district police chief Sidharth Mohan Jain told dpa.

No arrests had been made so far. Jain said initial investigations found no evidence of any teachers being involved in the two students' deaths.

Television footage also showed a mob beating Sinha with sticks. The villagers then attacked police leading to six policemen being injured.
