Cape Town – An Indian youth was shot and killed after he attempted to prevent the rape of his elder sisters in West Bengal, according to reports.

The Indian Express reported that Ganesh Murmu was shot at close range in the early hours when he tried to stop four youths, who had made a forced entry into Murmu’s home, from raping his sisters aged 22 and 24.

One of the girls told Indian Express that “the four had covered their faces. They attacked both of us. My brother kept pleading to them to let us go but they didn’t pay any heed to him. Then one of them suddenly took out a gun and fired at Ganesh”.

Following the gunshot, neighbours arrived at the scene prompting the assailants to flee.

According to a villager the police arrived late and failed to register a case of molestation and attempt to rape.

A police official, Tarun Halder, resposponded by saying they were looking in to the murder and that there was no written complaint about the molestation or attempt to rape.

Indian rape statistics have come under the spotlight after numerous rape incidents in the last year.

The most significant being the gang-rape of a 23-year-old Indian student on a bus in New Delhi.
