New Delhi - A 14-year-old girl died and her mother was injured after they were allegedly thrown off a moving bus in India by a group of men who tried to molest them, police said on Thursday.

The bus conductor and the bus cleaner were arrested and charged with murder and molestation in connection with the incident in Punjab state's Moga district on Wednesday evening, area police chief Jatinder Singh Khaira said.

The victim's mother said that about six men had harassed her and her daughter after they boarded the bus to go to a Sikh temple.

"The men kept harassing and abusing us. No one helped. They first pushed my daughter off the bus, then me," the girl's mother told reporters at the hospital.

The woman said her daughter died on the highway before they could get medical help.

"The woman alleges the men were attempting to molest her daughter. She claimed the men were annoyed when they protested and later threw them off the bus," Khaira said.

The bus company is owned by the family of state Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal, who condemned the incident.

The incident has echoes of a video which went viral online in January showing two sisters fighting back against men who were apparently sexually harassing them on a bus in northern India.

The video received widespread attention in the country, where attacks on women and sexual violence had already been a focus of public debate since the fatal gang rape of a student on a bus in New Delhi in 2012.
