Iran bans two newspapers

Tehran - Two leading Iranian reformist newspapers were banned from appearing on Monday after publishing a letter from a defeated candidate alleging rigging in the first round of presidential elections, reformist sources told AFP.
"The dailies Eghbal and Aftab were prevented from distributing for publishing the letter from (defeated election candidate) Mehdi Karoubi," said reformist official Issa Saharkiz.
"We do not know if this measure only applies to today's issue or if it is a more long term ban," he added.
The daily Eghbal is the newspaper of the main reformist party, the Islamic Iran Participation Front, which is led by Mohammad Reza Khatami, the brother of the current president.
Aftab is seen as close to Karoubi, who came third in the elections and alleged the vote was rigged by ultra-conservatives.
