Israel: Jewish movement OKs gay rabbis

2012-04-20 15:01

Jerusalem - The Conservative Jewish seminary in Israel has voted to allow gays and lesbians to become rabbis, overcoming years of opposition by many of its own leaders.

The Schechter Rabbinical Seminary, affiliated with Israel's Conservative Jewish movement, announced it would begin accepting gay and lesbian rabbinical students this fall.

The seminary's dean said it is committed to both Jewish law and pluralism, a reference to various branches of Judaism.

The decision late on Thursday ends a rift with the US branch, which has allowed gay and lesbian rabbinical students since 2007. It ordained its first openly lesbian rabbi last year.

The Conservative movement interprets Jewish law more strictly than the liberal Reform movement, but its ordination of female rabbis and other practices are not accepted by more stringent Orthodox Jews.

Wonderful news. A religion dragging itself in to the 21st century.

Ah so you're a jew. It all makes sense now.

You can't have it both ways (pun intended). Either religion is simply a man-made system of beliefs or it's not. You appear to believe the former, so I suggest you google "anthropology of religion". In this case it's probably religion dragging society into the 21st century, as you put it.

@Mike Actually this story is more about religious homophobia than religion itself. I think it is great that the Jews are leading the way in treating all people equally. Not like all those rabid gay hating Jeebus droolers.

@Heiku What would it matter if I was or not unless you are trying some snide anti-semitism. You are, aren't you. Shame on you, bigot.

Being Atheist has then become your religion. IT doesn't make sense that you 'waste' so much effort and time informing yourself and updating yourself on the very thing you claim you don't believe in. I don't believe in aliens, therefore meaning I don't go read up on their latest 'findings' regarding other life in the universe, because I am CERTAIN of their non existence. Living a life to prove the non-existence of God is strange to me (enslaves/servant to it). Think about it, atheist only exist because of religion. Without belief in God- atheist wouldn't exist. You exist due to the existence of the very thing that you claim doesn't.

Israel glorifies life! While anti-Israel incitement, lies and propaganda against the Jewish sate is rife in the Middle East. Fact remains that Israel is a democracy, and as such has been the only safe-heaven for Homosexuals in the Middle East. Israel is the only country in the Middle East that does not discriminate whether you are Gay, White, Black, Jew, Christian or Muslim. all citizens are equal and the bluff of "apartheid" is purely a lie that is the border control crossings between the state of Israel and the future Palestinian state - making Israel look like an aggressor for their self defence from fanatical terror who refuse peace with Israel - only a 'holy' pathetic war. The fact that they are gay does not bother me - the fact that as community leaders they show leadership to the younger population might (but that is ONLY on a personal level). Anyways its nice to see that religion is fast following in the footsteps of democracy, freedom and human dignity. While over the border in Gaza Hamas murders any gay that comes out of the closet, Israel wins the most gay friendly city in the world award - Tel Aviv. The reason why there is no peace is because none of Israel's neighbours like her - purely because these freedoms contradict the lack of freedom the fanatical religious regimes of the Middle East uphold. The difference between loving life and glorifying death are just too great for an opportunity for peace in our times.
