Israel: No decision on Iran attack

2012-08-16 20:26

Jerusalem - Israel is still weighing a course of action against Iran's nuclear programme, Defence Minister Ehud Barak said on Thursday, confirming a US assessment that no decision on a military attack had been made.

"There is a forum of nine [ministers], there is a [security] cabinet, and a decision, when it is required, will be taken by the Israeli government," Barak said in parliament in response to accusations by opposition lawmakers that he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were rushing towards war with Tehran.

A flurry of comments by Israeli officials and Israeli media reports over the past week put financial markets on edge by appearing to suggest a strike could be launched before the US presidential election in November.

At a news conference in Washington on Tuesday, US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said it was important that military action be the "last resort", adding that there was still time for sanctions and diplomatic pressure to work.

"I don't believe they've made a decision as to whether or not they will go in and attack Iran at this time," Panetta said.

At a parliamentary session that ratified the appointment of a new civil defence minister, Barak said the Iranian issue was being discussed repeatedly and in depth in Israeli government forums.

"This doesn't mean there aren't differences. The issue is complicated, but the issue is being deliberated," he said, referring to reports of high level divisions on whether or not to launch an attack on Iran's remote nuclear sites.

Iran rejects Israeli and Western allegations that its nuclear programme is aimed at producing atomic weapons.

It has threatened wide-ranging reprisals if attacked, retaliation that could increase the likelihood the United States would be drawn into the conflict.

As long as the UN right to veto exists war always remains the option. Both governments are killers yet both countries people are peaceful and do not want war. As a person of Jewish heritage who's grandparent suffered I am shocked of the overplay of hater or denier when someone does not agree with Israel’s growth policy. Not everybody is conservative right wing immigrant bigot nor a government propaganda trolls who are paid to blog. Shame on you for degrading the holocaust by pulling the hater anti-Semitic chant out at every opportunity of disagreement. Shame you disgrace!!

      Well said Piet!

Israel was created in 1948 from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish and Palestinian people, and Palestine 43%. Most of the Israeli territory was the Negev Desert. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. Palestinians with their unelected, self-serving neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they even invaded Israel twice. Full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what some wrongly call "stealing land". There have been almost daily attacks by Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. Children. Kindergarten. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. Israel defends herself. Yes sometimes going too far, which is unacceptable, but self-defense nonetheless. All that needs to happen is for Palestinians to choose peace side by side with Israel. This is more likely going forward now because the unelected dictators are being removed from power by their people one by one. They will no longer use the Palestinians for their own internal political ploys.

The Iranian regime adjusts elections to hold onto power. It has stolen the Iranian government from the Iranian people. It funds the Jihadist movement that has killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of innocent people, mainly Muslims in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere. It is supporting Bashar Assad's brutal oppression of Syrians wanting nothing more than the right to vote. It supports the stoning of women. It openly calls for the elimination of Israel and denies the Holocaust, the single biggest attempt at human genocide in human history: six million people exterminated. It is dishonest, highly repressive, and self-serving at the expense of the Iranian people and humanity. It's days are numbered, and it knows this.

@fred.fraser Fred, you need to educate yourself. Since the end of WW1 there have been international laws which forbid the gaining of territory through was in the absence of a negotiated peace agreement. You really do need to improve your knowledge and not just rely on VirtualJewishLibrary.com 1) No negotiated settlement regarding the West Bank, + 2) Territory occupied as a result of war which is illegal without 1), + 3) Allowing conquerors' civilian population to occupy invaded territory is in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions + 4) All confirmed by the International Court of Justice opinion on "the Wall" = that the West Bank squats are illegal QED. Please don't thank me for the free historical fact and international law lesson. It was a pleasure. I believe the Zionist Myths need to shown up for what they are.

  • fred.fraser.12 - 2012-08-17 05:36

The need will not arise. The Iranian regime, like all the dictatorships in the region, will be removed by their own people.

      captaine.morgan.90 - 2012-08-17 11:00

After they get a Nuke ?!?!

      jason.faraday.3 - 2012-08-19 08:59

I thought they had them already. That is what the ranting posters say. LOL. All based on an early 10 year old laptop that no-one is allowed to see.
