Israel airstrikes kill man in Gaza

2012-02-12 10:45

Gaza City - A Palestinian in Gaza died early on Sunday after being wounded in a series of retaliatory Israeli airstrikes, Gaza medical sources said.

The fatality was identified as Abdel Karim Zatuniya, an elderly man serving as a guard at the barracks in the Zeitun area, south-east of Gaza city, who was wounded in an airstrike late on Saturday night in which four other people were wounded. No militant faction in Gaza announced Zatuniya a member.

Three other airstrikes - near the Karni crossing east of Gaza city, east of Khan Younis and at an empty house in Rafah - resulted in no further casualties.

The Israeli military confirmed launching the strikes, and in a statement early on Sunday said its aircraft "targeted a terror tunnel and a weapon manufacturing facility in the northern Gaza Strip, a terror tunnel in the central Gaza Strip and an additional terror tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip", noting direct hits.

"These sites were targeted in response to the rocket fire on communities in southern Israel," the statement read, noting that a rocket on Friday from Gaza that struck between two houses in the Hof Ashkelon area had lightly injured an Israeli woman.

Earlier on Saturday night, a rocket fired by Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip hit southern Israel causing no casualties or damage, an Israeli police spokesperson said.

"A rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip at the Eshkol region. It landed in an open area without causing any damage or injuries," Micky Rosenfeld said.

Speaking in Tehran on Saturday, Hamas prime minister of Gaza Ismail Haniya reiterated his movement's long-held stance it "will never recognise Israel", as Palestinian efforts to form a temporary unity government headed by Palestinian Authority president Mahmud Abbas continue.

Israel rejects efforts by Hamas to link up with Fatah, and views Hamas as a terrorist organisation and Iran as its sponsor and weapon supplier.

"The resistance will continue until all Palestinian land, including Al-Quds [Jerusalem], has been liberated and all the refugees have returned," Haniya said.

Why doesn’t the world stand up and condemn this type of action against innocent civilians. Airstrikes on civilians, how do explain that type of cruelty. The American wants to invade countries that are rich in recourses pretending to help. Why don't they intervene now? The whole world is corrupt not just in SA.

      Boer - 2012-02-12 11:52

What do you really know about the Americans political innerworkings??? Sounds like you want to blame America for others mistakes, not cool man. Leave America to do its thing you have no say in it anyway. Bly daar in jou verkrampte korrupte land en dink voor jy praat man. Smaak my jy is dom.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-02-12 12:43

Razz see the comments, this is a no win situation.

      Fidel - 2012-02-12 13:12

      Ouch Razz!

      Fidel - 2012-02-12 13:17

@Gogood The Palestinians have made numerous gestures and compromises to agreeing to the 1967 borders, recognised by the intl community and to forfeit the ROR (Right of Return), and what have the Israelis done, claimed that the whole of that area is Eretz Israel as was bequethed to them by their sky daddy. They haven't stopped building illegal settlements on land that is supposed to form the Palestinian state. The have also refused East Jerusalem as Palestinian seat of authority. What more are Palestinians supposed to do.....die or live as refugees in neighbouring countries.

      Craig - 2012-02-12 13:24

RAZZ is just a pee brained racist pig... you go live in souther Israel and have over 200 000 rockets and mortars (yes, that is what was fired at Israel last year...) fired aat you ... judgmental idiot

      Bobo - 2012-02-12 13:26

@Razz : Nothing wrong in speaking your mind unless you have first hand info or residing in that country.... You Ask: "Why doesn’t the world stand up and condemn this type of action against innocent civilians. Airstrikes on civilians, how do explain that type of cruelty." It doens`t seem that you have the slightest idea what you are talking oubout.....And yes I`ve been there, I suggest you educate yourself before making comments on a war you know nothing about.

what do you know thats going on in israel? , gaza terrorists attack innocent israelis, israelis hit back at targets which are not civilian

      goyougoodthing - 2012-02-12 14:29

@Fidel - I agree with you. Israel is a terrorist state that should not exist, no wonder the rightful owners are cross. But then this is a no compromise deal, neither side gives an inch. I don't know why the Zionists think they own that piece of land, but they do.

      Dirk - 2012-02-12 14:45

Innocent Palestinian? There was only one and he has now died.

      customdesign - 2012-02-13 06:15

@Goyougoodthing you've got to be kidding me??? Suicide bombers attack them and fire rockets indescriminantly into Israel and now they are the terrorist state? Get off the drugs dude

      Jaba - 2012-02-13 06:46

I have been there as well. What Israeli defense forces are doing there is just defending their civilians.

  • Razz - 2012-02-12 12:37

@Brenda. I experienced this first hand. Let me be “brainless” as you say. How brainless are your brothers who fight ordinary civilians with tankers? How many deaths did Israel suffer compared to the onslaught against human rights. Go and test my statement and others like Ronnie Kasrils and Richard Goldstone. The ordinary modest Jew is totally against Israels policies. Who won’t react when someone steals your land and destroys your property? How furious do we get when Malema wants to redistribute land. What a shame!!!!

These Palasyinian cowards, fire rockets at innocent families and are to scared to take on the israel milatary. When they get punished for their wicked deeds, the world crys foul play. Meanwhile it is the wicked Palastinians starting all the trouble

Bible Prophesy spoke of theses days in Zechariah. God says Jerusalem will be a stumbling block to all the people of the world. And God also says those who come against Jerusalem HE God will cut to pieces. Watch and pray as this prophetic word comes to pass in our day. As for that idiot saying do not bring 3000 year old myths into the picture displays his ignorance. Time will once again prove the Word of God True and undeniable.

      Fidel - 2012-02-12 13:09

When anyone's post talks about "historical Israel" refering to 3000 years ago, it's no suprise that these posts are only a collection of ridiculous myths. It's too late for that, people don't believe this anymore and people are going to laugh at you.

      Bobo - 2012-02-12 13:47

Q : Ever wondered what it is that Israel have that the rest of the world so desperately want ? A: Strategic military value....The worst is yet to come.

      Fidel - 2012-02-12 13:53

@Bobo You must have been brought up playing fightball as well. The world wants justice, stability, to live in peace and prosperity. I couldn't give a rat's ass about Israel's military strategic value.

      Dirk - 2012-02-12 14:55

No Castro, we are laughing at you and your ignorance.

      Fidel - 2012-02-12 15:04

@Dirk You mean you cannot come up with a credible response.

      Bobo - 2012-02-12 15:44

@ Fidel : Yes you have a point..I was brought up to protect myself and those around me. On the other hand I wasn`t brought up to shoot rockets into sivilians across the road, and call it justice because I have a problem with the government?? Where`s your peace now??

  • Craig - 2012-02-12 13:26

When will the slap fight end??? Why cant they just talk already??? Us south africans like to shout at each other, but at the end of the day we talk things out - if we can do it, why cant they?

      Jaba - 2012-02-13 08:04

go Google Hamas's charter & goals - and you will understand why there will be no peace. Furthermore you will see the difference between the ANC & Palestinian leadership; how the one realised that violence will not succeed and turned to peace, and the latter that believes that violence, blood and war is the only religious route they have to proceed.
