Israel arrests Al Jazeera reporter

2011-08-16 12:00

Jerusalem - Israel has arrested a Palestinian journalist who works for the Arabic language Al Jazeera satellite network, and a journalists' advocacy group says he is being held without charges.

Al Jazeera said in a release issued on Monday that Samer Allawi, its bureau chief in Afghanistan, was taken into custody on August 10 as he tried to leave the West Bank to return to the Afghan capital, Kabul.

The Committee to Protect Journalists in New York said in a statement that Allawi has been detained without charges and called on Israel to clarify the legal basis for holding him.

The Israeli military, Shin Bet internal security service and police had no comment on the affair on Tuesday.

Al Jazeera said Allawi was in the West Bank spending his annual vacation with his family in his native village of Sebastia.

The lawyer sent to defend him said he was questioned about his work and personal relationships, dating back to his schooldays in the West Bank, the Al Jazeera statement said.

Allawi was also interrogated about his personal finances and asked if he had any contact with American, Jordanian and Palestinian intelligence forces, Al Jazeera said.

Investigators also took his password for his personal e-mail and work password, the statement added.

You really need to ask your self why are they so sensitive about security that they regularly detain innocent civilians all the time with no legal proof or motivation other than being Palestinian.

      j4truth - 2011-08-16 12:28

Because "innocent civilians" do (or have done) acts of terror! "innocent civilians" have also strapped bombs around themselves. I agree Israeli defense is a sensitive matter, but they have reason to be!

      Arno Young - 2011-08-16 12:51

@Ridah. Perhaps this might give you an idea: Exiled Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal said reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas must be based on jihad ("holy" war) against Israel. "The first step [to liberating Jerusalem] is refusal to negotiate with Israel," Meshaal told participants at an al-Quds conference in Sudan on Sunday, adding that reconciliation between the two factions is "to establish a new, reconciled Palestinian position based on jihad," AFP reported. Now remember, those are not militant wings, but democratic organs elected by 'innocent civilians all the time with no legal proof or motivation other than being Palestinian'

      Jayxer - 2011-08-16 13:24

The primary aim of all muslims and palestinians is to destroy Israel so why does this arrest come as a surprise? Surely they should arrest and extradite all muslims?

      Slackie - 2011-08-16 13:33

@Jayxer The reason Palistinians want to destroy Israel is because Israel invaded their land killing their woman and children, then set up settelments there, they want thier land back and don't have tanks and planes and phosphorus so they use man bombs. It's a war.

      Jayxer - 2011-08-16 13:44

@Slackie The Israelis still have a considerable amount of their land to reclaim from the palestinians. They have recently had the go-ahead to build new houses in east Jerusalem but there is still quite a lot more their land to reclaim.

      Slackie - 2011-08-16 13:50

@Jayxer ??? How do you figure?? Israel only became a state in 1945. Go look at a map from that time frame and superimpose it on a modern map of Israel. I think you will find the land has grown beyond the agreed borders.

"South Africans will never see peace until Palestinians see peace" Nelson Mandela

      Jayxer - 2011-08-16 14:11

@Slackie Israel was a state millenia ago, long before the palestinians encroached. See the link: Samaria and Judah (now referred to as the west bank) belonged to Israel including all of Jerusalem.

      Slackie - 2011-08-16 14:22

@Jaxer Ja two points 1. It was not exclusive to jews 2. That land was also lost for millenia, The palastinians never gave up the fight yet, so technically the war is still on.

      MosesMabhida - 2011-08-16 15:19

      M. Khoza Madiba also was quite clear about the Palestinians choosing the path of peace to achieve their gains not Jihad like Hamas thinks would work. The only reason why Madiba never forced the issue is because he put the blame squarely at the feet of the Palestinians religious fundamentalists whose only goal was the destruction of Israel - and Madiba was/is against the destruction of the state of Israel.

      MosesMabhida - 2011-08-16 15:28

Slackie; technically speaking, if there was actually a war... it would of taken place decades ago - and today no one would know who the Palestinians are. The fact that Israel has not destroyed their enemy is bizarre at best – however fact remains that the Palestinians are used by the rest of the Arab world as pawns to keep Arab regimes in power under the flag of “hate of Israel”. Any other country would have wiped their enemy out; like Turkey for example and their problems with the Kurds or the Armenian people, just like the US, the UK or any other country that is the stronger side of a conflict. If the Palestinians choose the path of peace - they will be granted a state. But terror will never work and lead them nowhere - and the fact that religious beliefs push for terror (Jihad) mean there will never be peace in Israel/Palestine.

      RacingShark - 2011-08-18 13:45

At Jayxer, so if Israel is entitled to there land based on a ancient kingdom then all european whites should leave South Africa, USA and Australia because these lands also once belonged to indigenous ancient kingdoms.

  • WATCHMAN - 2011-08-16 12:37

Of course a journalists' advocacy group would say he's being held without charges. Isn't that what the media's job is, to spread disinformation and lies?

      Slackie - 2011-08-16 13:05

I don't remeber israel stating the reasons for holding him, so one point for the advocacy group. We will will see what lies the jews will conjour up to use this pawn for use against a respected news agency that exposes israels crimes.

      BrassCopper - 2011-08-16 15:48

Why Israel let in these Aljazeera reporters (AKA Hamas agents) I will never understand. Israel needs to rethink this democracy thing (well at least some of the freedoms the adversary has in Israel)… cause seems like their biggest threat is from within.

      Monacoroyals - 2011-08-16 15:36

Israel has to be a bulldog - to protect itself from all the animals that surround them! But God loves Israel, and as such - they are protected by a higher power. It would be nice if one day the Arabs along Israel’s' borders will accept them... but the religion of peace will never accept a peaceful conclusion to this conflict. So I doubt any good news from the region in this millennia.

      BrassCopper - 2011-08-16 15:51

Sharief You are correct; Israel will be destroyed when earth is hit by a meteor and we all go up in flames. The only difference is that only then will you realize your mistake.

      WATCHMAN - 2011-08-16 18:27

Actually Israel has a master, the Muslims think they have one, who really is the master of deception. Further Israel will not be destroyed according to scripture in the Bible where it says, Jer 31:35-37 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: (36) If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me forever. (37) Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD. Well now, we know according to the Bible that this just ain’t going to happen, but let me tell you that many of the Arab nations are due for a whipping.

      RacingShark - 2011-08-18 13:51

I never like to make the Israel and Palestinian issue a religious debate but most commentators defend Israel on religious grounds which by international Law is insufficient for the simple reason that not everyone has the same beliefs. So why Should the Jewish religion be favored to others. At Whatchman, since you insist to make this a religious dispute. Tell me who wrote the current bibles? Man or God? That Bible was altered so many times over the years by Mans hand thus there are so many conflicting contradictions. Thus atheism is growing.

  • Gouetor - 2011-08-16 14:24

@ Slackie- you talk about agreements. The British divided the land and Jordan was given to the Palestinians/Muslims. Then the Jordanian government refused to accept the people who came from the land allocated to Israel and all the Muslim nation declared war on Israel.Talk about brotherly love...

      Slackie - 2011-08-16 14:43

@Gouetor First of all I am not Muslim, second if you think only muslims have exibited this behaviour you are wrong. Bottom line is an agreement was made between the then palastinians and the would be israelies. Then Israel pushed beyond those borders by using force. The final alterations made to the mandate were in 1967. Why have the isarlies extended beyond this? By using phosphorus of all things.

      Skim - 2011-08-16 15:52

Slackie practicing Taquiya again? We know your holy book says that you can lie if it furthers the Islam. As for Sharief yes you right but that prediction is not found in the Koraan but in the bible the book that is soooo corrupted

  • smurfdogg - 2011-08-16 15:41

@Slackie, lemme get this straight - Israel was the aggressor in the 1967 war ?! The Arabs lost territory in that war as a result of aggression against Israel ! Had they chosen peace East Jerusalem would still be under their control. They have consistantly chosen war since 1948 and nothing will change, they only understand the language of violence. UN resolution 242 confirms that pre-1967 borders are not defensible and Israel should not return to these borders due to continued Arab aggression. Another thing, there is no such thing as a Palestinian. There has never been a country called Palestine. There is no evidence that these people have any ancestral connection to the land. Judea and Sumaria belongs to the Jews, they can prove it, their ancestors are buried there.

      Scrutineer - 2011-08-16 15:54

Oh come on, Sharief! Drop the hatred! It's not going to get anybody anywhere.

you praising these swines that sprayed white phosporous over a primary school killing innocent children last week...u just as pathetic as those who carried out this genocide, however the good thing is god is watching and his retribution will be swift

  • Gouetor - 2011-08-16 16:01

@ Slackie - where did I say that you are a muslim or that only muslims behave like this? I just pointed out that there is always two sides to any story with the truth useally somewhere in the middle. Israel have lots to answer for, but to portray the Palestinians and neighbouring muslim countries exclusively as the poor victims are totally misguided

Golda Mair, "If the Jews had not fought back against the Arab armies and had been destroyed in 1948, they would have received the most beautiful eulogies throughout the world. Instead, they chose to stand their ground and defend themselves. And in winning, they received the world's condemnation. Golda Meir said she would take the condemnation over the eulogies."
