Israel calls Iran greatest nuclear threat

2012-08-28 22:25

Vienna - Muslim nations and Israel are heading for a confrontation at a 154-nation nuclear meeting next month over an Arab initiative to criticize Israel's secretive atomic programme.

Documents submitted for that gathering show that Arab nations are seeking Israel's censure - a move the Jewish state says is a sideshow that deflects attention from the real danger to Mideast peace - Iran.

In asking September's International Atomic Energy Agency meeting to reprimand Israel, Jordan says Israel is guilty of thwarting "all initiatives to free the region of the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction, and in particular of nuclear weapons."

Israel, in turn, warns that the Arab initiative is "serving Iran's attempt to divert the attention of the international community... [from] its quest for nuclear weapons."

Israel is widely assumed to be the only Mideast country with such arms. But it refuses to either confirm or deny its status, sticking to an official policy of ambiguity that, combined with the stalemate over Palestinian demands, feeds tensions in the region.

Israel's Arab neighbours have repeatedly demanded that it declare itself, join the Non-proliferation Treaty and open its nuclear activities to full inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency - conditions Israel says it can consider only after peace rules in the Middle East.

But Arab nations insist that peace can come only if Israel takes the steps its demands, leading to a stand-off that has stretched over decades.

Already high tensions over the issue have grown in recent years as Iran forges ahead with nuclear activities that Israel says are meant to allow it to make atomic arms, a suspicion shared by the United States and other Western nations. Iran denies any interest in such weapons but refuses to co-operate with an IAEA probe of Iran's alleged secret work on nuclear weapons.

Iran also continues to enrich uranium, which can make both reactor fuel and the core of nuclear missiles, instead of accepting foreign offers of such fuel. That comes despite international sanctions against Iran and threats of attack from the Jewish state, which says it will not tolerate the existence of an Iran armed with nuclear weapons.

Nuclear Non-proliferation

Tehran has warned in turn that any Israeli strike on its nuclear facilities will be met with a crushing response.

The initiative to censure the Jewish state in a vote at the IAEA meeting comes from the 17 Arab members of the nuclear agency. But it is expected to be supported by Iran as well as most if not all the other Muslim countries, as well as others critical of Israel's stance on Palestine, meaning it has a good chance of passing.

The Arab and Israeli documents were submitted to a preparatory commission for the meeting. Arguing the Arab position, Jordanian Ambassador Makram Queisi says Israel is exposing the Middle East "to nuclear risks and threatening peace" by refusing to throw open its nuclear facilities to international purview.

Beyond his warning on Iran, Ehud Azoulay, Israel's chief IAEA delegate, questions whether Arab nations have the moral right to point fingers.

He says some have "a long, unflattering history of violating their international obligations and other norms of the international community" - an apparent poke at Syria, itself suspected of hiding a nuclear programme and the target of international condemnation for atrocities attributed to government troops fighting insurgents.

Some 20 000 people have died since an uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad's rule began in March 2011, according to human rights groups.

At last year's meeting, Arab states repeated their demands of Israel but did not push for a resolution targeting the Jewish state by name. But the conference did pass a resolution calling on all Middle East states to adopt the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.

"Documents submitted for that gathering show that Arab nations are seeking Israel's censure - a move the Jewish state says is a sideshow that deflects attention from the real danger to Mideast peace - Iran." Well Middle Eastern countries seem to know who the danger is in that region, and it is Israel. The great truth that cannot be spoken is that Israel is a huge evil that descended on the Middle East and it sustains its evil with the illegal ownership of nuclear warheads.

      boom.baracus - 2012-08-28 22:56

Oh shut up you Jew hater. You make me sick to the stomach.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-08-29 00:23

Fidel, I don't want to confuse you too much, and most certainly don't wat to make you angry, that you feel you have to sling all kinds of insults at me, But are these Arab nations, 'the same ones' whuch want this assad dog out ?????????

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-08-29 02:19

According to Fidel, Nelson Mandela is a phony. His belief-system is obviously faulty. Therefore, if he says Israel is the biggest danger in the Middle East, it is bankable that true reality is exactly the opposite.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-08-29 02:22

Steer, assuming what you have written is not positive sarcasm, you're a racist of the highest order.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-08-29 06:40

Of course Israel is dangerous, and therefore she still exists. However Israel can be, and wants to be, the most peaceful and benevolent nation on earth, but sworn enemies will ensure that the sword of Israel is poised at their throats. Fidel, if Israel was evil then it would not be the only democracy in the Middle East, and a highly successful one at that. The evil is Islam with its outdated medieval injunctions. All nations beware of Israel.

      MallyGold - 2012-08-29 08:10

For Israel to open up her defence strategy to public scrutiny would be akin to signing a death warrant upon each Israeli citizen. Already Israel is attacked by Arabs who continually fire rockets into Israel aimed at ordinary people with the wilful intention to slaughter these defenceless men women and children. We have all heard the vitriolic hatred spewed by most Arabs against the very existence of Israel; so their secrets must remain hidden from their enemies otherwise the same fate Samson suffered shall await them too.

Muslims and Arabs in particular often preach peace while waging war against you. They do not understand negotiating in peace, but by G-d they know a big stick when you strike them with it. Israel doesn't use sticks ,they use a hammer. The arabs understand leaving the hammer wielding fella alone.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-08-29 14:35

You think that Israel can get away with this forever. But that is a delusion. When they eventually realise that, it will be too late. Its called hubris. All Israelis should acquaint themselves with "Imperial Hubris" by Michael Scheuer. Imperial hubris knows no bounds indeed!

      steele.oyle - 2012-08-29 07:55

Stick to the topic on hand Fred. Fact is, Israel cannot prevent Arab nations from acquiring nuclear weapons when they have been stockpiling and hiding them for years. By the way, you still believe there were WMD's in Iraq, so once again look at your own short comings before picking on others.

      JohanCduToit - 2012-08-29 08:22

I agree. Before Israel can say a word about Iran they need to get rid of their own nuclear weapons. Until then, they should STFU.

      ivan.schoultz - 2012-08-29 10:53

@fred.fraser.12 - well, it did ... and it did it with additional help from Mossad. There is plenty of evidence for this. Denying the evidence does not make the evidence invalid.

      rick.kabose - 2012-08-29 13:18

Ummm Steele - Iraq and Syria tried to get nukes,Israel prevented them then and will in the future. A bully doesn't cower when you let him beat you,but he learns to leave you be when you beat the $%^& out of him.

Just like when the ANC said peace can only came after the fall of Apartheid, that just got us closer to war! Palestinian demands are not met? What about Israeli demands? Dont do it Israel! Just like in SA your enemies only seek to disarm you before attempting to destroy you!

      Selby Mncina - 2012-08-29 07:29

I will always stand with Israel, no matter what!

      steele.oyle - 2012-08-29 07:56

      JohanCduToit - 2012-08-29 08:27

Selby, why would you support a system of aparheid like they have in Israel? "On 6 June 2008, Mr. Kgalema Motlanthe, the Deputy President of South Africa and of the African National Congress, who had recently visited the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, told a delegation of Arab Knesset members visiting South Africa to study its democratic constitution that conditions for Palestinians under occupation were "worse than conditions were for Blacks under the Apartheid regime." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_and_the_apartheid_analogy

      Larry - 2012-08-29 09:03

Johan, The West Bank and Gaza is not Israel, and there is no apartheid in Israel. You lie to support the myth and nonsense created by haters of Jews and Israel.

      JohanCduToit - 2012-08-29 09:52

Larry, stop trying to be clever and playing with words. The people of Palestine live under Israel's brutal rule in what is very similar to apartheid, just much MUCH worse.

  • Gcodi Mahomed - 2012-08-29 07:27

      MallyGold - 2012-08-29 09:14

I have been to Israel and can testify to the fact that all citizens are totally free in every sense of the word. There is complete freedom of movement and worship for all.

      phathuchicos - 2012-08-29 09:54

ofcourse there's no apartheid in Israel just like pre-1994 SA, there was no apartheid in SA according to the alpha race because they weren't experiencing it. So if Israel is occupying another country(while fencing it to prohibit movement of people) while imposing laws that aren't the same as those in in Israel... what do you call that kind of government.

      JohanCduToit - 2012-08-29 10:05

MallyGold, I have been to Israel too and I just cannot imagine how you can be so blind not to see anything? Were you really there? Please read the wikipedia link I posted about apartheid in Israel. Search google. The evidence of atrocities committed by Israel is just overwhelming.

  • arthur.salvado - 2012-08-29 07:48

Forget all the racist comments. It's very simple. Iran and Israel must open up their nuclear programmes/facilities for the world to see. Israel DOES threaten their neighbors and hence their wish to match them militarily . Israel does bully the little nations because it has the backing of the USA and of course, nuclear weapons. I do back Israel's right to exist 110%. I know that Israel's neighbors don't always behave but I believe it to be a reaction of impotency. I wish all concerned would give peace a chance.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-08-29 08:16

Weapons inspectors into Iran - and Israel. Any arguments against?

      MallyGold - 2012-08-29 08:28

Arthur, Israel has never bullied anyone. They desire peace and they state so. Israel has never desired war, nor have they ever mounted an unprovoked attack. Israel has only retaliated to direct aggression and has never once been the aggressor and never shall be. However, Israel is swift and lethal in defence of their citizens; quite rightly so. If the Arabs truly want peace they can achieve it this very instant by simply choosing to end their aggression. Israel is already seated at the round table waiting for honest negotiations truthfully aimed at peace. The prerequisite for round table discussions to begin is a declaration and absolute guarantee of peace by each and every middle east country.

      JohanCduToit - 2012-08-29 08:32

Israel is not at all interested in peace. They want this perceptual state of conflict so that they have an excuse to kill off more and more Palestinians.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-08-29 08:46

"Honest negotiations" my foot! Didn't you see the Palestinian papers which showed Israeli intransigence as far as negotiating in good faith is concerned. It is a stated Zionist objective or is it halacha, that Eretz Israel should be established. The land stealing and settler expansion is no coincidence. Israeli Zionist right-wingers have stated their aim of changing the realities on the ground by stealing more land to make it impossible for a Palestinian state to be viable. The policy of the past 30 years has been to colonise, avoid peace, hide behind the U.S. Security Council Veto, continue to run people out of their Jerusalem and West Bank homes till there is nothing left to negotiate. Israel is practising the Nazi ideology of 'lebensraum’. They will not stop until all Palestinians are either dead or existing as refugees in other neighbouring countries.

      dylan.sciarappa - 2012-08-29 09:02

@Mally tell that to the Palestinians

      MallyGold - 2012-08-29 09:25

King David of Israel first established the united Kingdom of Israel in 1000 BC. Jerusalem, the oldest city in the world, has been a holy city since Jesus was crucified in 30 CE. Jerusalem has been destroyed twice (in consequence of disobedience to God) besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times. Israel took back that land during the Six-Day War in June 1967 from Arab forces. The Israeli victory saw Israel take control of the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria. This fact of war also puts paid to any argument that Palestinians continue to lose their land as Israel continues to build Jewish settlements on Palestinian land, for Israel is building upon Israeli land “taken back” quite legally in the 6-day war. The Jews have the right to live in Israel, where they came from. They have no desire to live in Palestine, wherever that may be. Remember, Palestinians were given the Gaza Strip as a free gift from Israel in exchange for peace. Israel went to great expense and untold sacrifices by their own people to hand this land over. In return these Palestinians continue to aim missiles at Israel. The Palestinians accepted Gaza with a hidden agenda of treacherous proportions, which was confirmed by immediately reneging on their promises. Therefore, giving more land to the Palestinians is simply out of the question.

      gerhard.kress.3 - 2012-08-29 09:32

Mally Damascus is the oldest city in the world.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-08-29 09:34

Israel's disdain for any UN resolution other than the mistaken one that ok'd its foundation makes it basically an outlaw state. They've even rejected the borders that are part of that resolution. Israel has to stop its expansionist attitude and agree to live within the 1967 borders. This has been set out in UN resolution after UN resolution and has been accepted by the Arab nations as a basis of any future peace agreement.

Spoton FIDEL... i was wondering why Israel economy only grew when US is doing good, while they too like Greece are heavily indepted with dept at 73% of their GDP...and ontop of it all they live in a mineral-less drie zone along with Jordan, where could they find that kind of stability? hah ofcourse the USAID "From the people of the United States". I once saw that on a airlifter plane sitting in Ben Gurion Airport...ha ha ha

      Jaba - 2012-08-29 10:10

fidel / azanian... tell that to Microsoft, Dell, Facebook, Apple, IBM, Intel, Teva, UMI, Johnson&Johnson, Taxes Instruments, Motorola and the other thousands of foreign companies who have invested in research & development facilities in Israel; from Bio genetics, Hi-tech and Nano-technology - not because of US aid, but rather due to the human resource they find in Israel - the brain power – a resource way more profitable then Gas or Oil as it’s value is priceless. Nonetheless Israel has now found offshore Gas that would last 200 years. US Aid to Israel is a grudge “gift” as most Israelis do not want this 3 billion dollars as it comes with many conditions... The 3 billion goes into Research and Development in the defence industry which later the US has rights to and Israel can not sell, also any money spent on purchasing with the 3 billion must be done with US companies only... a few years ago China wanted to buy 10 billion dollars worth of Arms from Israel but the deal was cancelled due to the US "Aid" clauses. Luckily in the present day; the many billions in Arms with S.Korea, India, Japan, Australia etc was not halted by the US. Israel and the US are best of friends - but sometimes it backfires economically like this grudge “Aid”.

      Jaba - 2012-08-29 10:30

Azanian Israel’s economy has grown in the last few years even though the world recession has places some pressure. Unemployment in Israel went from 10% in 2009 to 7% in 2012. Economic stats are out performing almost all developed nations and even some developing nation like our own. The Israeli ministry of finance and head of bank of Israel have won numerous achievement awards while everyone from Greece, China & Brazil is going to Israel to learn how this economic miracle functions. Israel’s foreign reserves have grown to 70 billion dollars – yes they in the black azanian. All this while they have not even started to market their new found gas fields worth approximately 200 billion dollars.

      ludlowdj - 2012-08-29 14:16

Amazing how America backs ISRAEL . Would it not be fair if the UN audits both Israel and IRAN at the same time. But seeing as the jews run the US and the UK they will continue to lie to the rest of the world about what is truely happening that side as they own the Media Corps . ISRAEL is not an Authorized state by law , how can we sit back and watch the jews enforce apartheid in the middle east. Boycott them and enforce sanctions on ISRAEL like the did in south africa and let see.

They gotta wake up before they realise they only ally is the US republicans 6. Israel supports any country that shows hostilities towards muslims or Arabs 7.Who keeeps poking who between Israel and Iran. 8.Both Israeland Iran want to rule a powerless decomposed middle-east I HOPE BY NOW YOU HAVE AN ANSWER And I hope one day Israel will realise that the world isnt the way the see it... other countries around the world make friends and remove their noses where they aren't supposed to stick them, and when threatened they seek peaceful resolutions. And when they offer help to other countries, they does so jointly with other nations. And I hope Iran too one follows a UN agreement that was reached regarding the use of A-power(T&C, when US, China, Israel... does so).

Yes we are against zionist oppression and yes we are against the apartheid state of Israel with its seperation wall which is injusctice and a crime against humanity, we are mindful of all the atrocities you have committed against the Palestinian people and we are recording it into the history of Israels existance.
