Israel can't stop nuclear Iran

2011-08-28 21:17

Jerusalem - Israel would not be able to halt Iran's reported quest for atomic weapons with a single strike, a senior Israeli defence official said on Sunday.

Israel and the West suspect Iran is trying to use its nuclear programme to develop atomic weapons, a charge denied by Tehran which says it wants to generate electricity.

Both Israel and the United States have hinted they might consider taking military action as a last resort to stop Iran getting the bomb.

The defence official, who in line with Israeli army guidelines declined to be identified, mentioned Iran during a review of the security situation in the Middle East in a briefing to foreign reporters.

"We're not talking about Iraq or Syria where one strike would derail a programme," the official said, referring to Israel's 1981 air strike that destroyed Iraq's atomic reactor and the bombing in 2007 of a Syrian site which the UN atomic agency said was very likely a nuclear reactor.

"With Iran it's a different project. There is no one silver bullet you can hit and that's over," the official said.

Israeli leaders have urged the United States and other Western countries to present Tehran with a credible military threat to back up economic sanctions already in place.

The official said the United States stood a better chance of forcing Iran to change its mind over its nuclear programme than Israel.

"With all respect to Israel... the greatest fear of the [Iranian] regime is the USA. There is no question about it."

Some analysts say the likelihood of an imminent Israeli war with Iran has ebbed, thanks to the perceived success of political pressure on Tehran.

Recent Israeli estimates do not show Iran developing nuclear weapons before 2015.

Israel is widely believed to have the only nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, and Iran has accused it of hypocrisy over the issue.

      Yeah, right.

      Anneck - 2011-08-28 23:15

Lehana, Israel can wipe any country off the map if they wanted to! Watch what you say! Israel has every right to defend itself and I stand behind them all the way!

the mighty iran who locks up its citizens for protesting against crooked elections? yeah very mighty. lol i love how you scum have tried to turn the word zionist into a dirty word. today was gliad shalits birthday, an israeli soldier who was taken captive by palestinians 6 years ago. he has been denied access to medical treatment by the the red cross and the UN. but you think zionist is a dirty word. you make it very clear what you and people like you believe is a good world to live in.

      daaivark - 2011-08-29 09:34

Promoting the notion of nuclear war is just insane, whether one supports Israel or not. Anneck, defence is what happens when someone actually attacks one. Threatening an invasion is NOT defence, it is sheer belligerence.

Just for interest's sake :-) many Jews have the Hebrew letter "shin" on their doorpost, which has significance in Judaism relating to God looking after them. Now look at a map of Jerusalem... built in the shape of a "shin". Not bad hey!

  • Riaad - 2011-08-29 00:21

Most Jews and Western Christians share a common ideology: Zionism, which demands that Israel be protected at all costs - to facilitate the coming of the Messiah (Christians believe it will be Jesus - Peace be upon him). And it WILL be, except that Jesus will, to their utter surprise, be returning as a Prophet, debunking all the false doctrines like Trinity and Atonement, invented by the Church. The Jews will reject Jesus (Pbuh) for a second time but will take an impostor as their awaited messiah, namely: The AntiChrist, thereby sealing their own fate. Millions will die on both sides in this Armageddon but in the end God's True Religion will prevail. The above is the Prophecy of Muhammad (Peace be upon him). It's truly awe-inspiring to read how many of Prophet Muhammad's (Pbuh)predictions have come true already, and how many more are still awaiting fulfilment. But as per the anti-Islam conspiracy, the knowledge of this subject is blocked out to the public, hence more is known of the vague riddles of Nostradamus than the straight-forward prophecies of Muhammad (Pbuh).

      Messenger - 2011-08-29 00:39

Riaad, please tell us about those predictions of Muhammad that you claim have already come true. I can tell you about many Bible prophecies that have already been fulfilled. What is the Quran's claim to fame?

      PinkAndProud - 2011-08-29 01:15

Seems to me ol' prophet Muhammad got a lot of tips out the christian bible.

And i'm sick of hearing Islam is the fastest growing religion world wide and that i should be worried. Whats growing 3 times as fast is Atheism and that is what all you Religious nut's should worry about. For now enjoy living amongst us, One day soon Atheist will just about be Gatvol of your rubbish and send you packing back to your holy lands that have never seen peace since your false gods came about.

      Matt :-) - 2011-08-29 11:10

@ Bones - are you mad? Everything in the Bible leads up to about 70AD, whereas Islam only stared in the 7th Century AD... @ Riaad - what miracles? I'm dubious of someone who claimed prophecy, yet got so many basic things wrong. Just look at various Koran accounts of the Old and New Testaments where the info is visibly confused (especially mixing up accounts of people, putting together stories of 2 people who lived centuries apart). And does the Koran not claim the Christian Trinity to be God, Mary and Joseph? BTW, the churches did not invent the Trinity - though the KJV doesn't give the actual word trinity, there are plenty of Biblical references to a triune God...

What a load of hocus pocus. It's amazing how many of the Bibles prophecies have been fulfilled especially the ones of the SON OF GOD. Yes GOD HAS A SON, JESUS CHRIST!!!! Isa Chapter 53, written hundreds of years before Christ's birth. Jesus will most definately come back and all the wicked that oppose HIM will be oblitorated. So whilst there is time, make a decision to commit your life to Him for He died for you that you might have oh such wonderful eternal life. If you don't choose Jesus, well then according to God's word your going to go to HELL!!!!!

  • meelo - 2011-08-29 06:09

Why can Israel keep war heads and Iran not ? Please take the time to explain.

      King Solomon - 2011-08-29 08:39

Because Iran has threatened to destroy Israel and Israel has never made any threats to anyone and wants to live in peace but is not being allowed to do so. If Israel has nuclear weapons, she will only use them if her very existence is being threatened which it is on a daily basis by most Muslim countries.

      meelo - 2011-08-29 09:03

King Solomon please provide us the link where this so called threats were made. And not something prepared by CNN commenting what Ahmedinejad said but with a proper interpretor

      daaivark - 2011-08-29 09:36

Israel has never made any threats to anyone? WHAT? Israel threatens it's neighbours all the time.

      Will2.0 - 2011-08-29 09:51

Israel has not made any threats? Sure. But bombed Iraq, bombed Syria , bombed Lebanon and occupied Palestine. If any Muslim country chose Israel's way of 'defending' themselves would you still call it self-defence? Methinks not.

      Anneck - 2011-08-29 10:53

daaivark, Israel is surrounded on all side by Muslim countries that want nothing more than to see Israel buried! Do you really think Israel wants war?

      Anneck - 2011-08-29 10:57

Will, there was never any Palestine to occupy, my friend. In the 19th century those lands were desolate and uninhabited and were bought by Jews fleeing persecution in Europe! Only THEN did the Muslims come along seeking jobs from the Jews who had already settled there!

      daaivark - 2011-08-29 11:15

Anneck, your reading of history is strange to say the least. People were living there before the movement of people from Europe. It wasn't just lying there waiting.

      Anneck - 2011-08-29 11:29

Daaivark, it's amazing how the true stories turn out to be the strange ones. Only people living in that area were found in the towns and cities and the majority of them were either Christian or Jewish. Not Muslim.

      daaivark - 2011-08-29 12:55

Oh my, Anneck. Your references are clearly rather one-sided in their reporting.

      Anneck - 2011-08-29 13:32

And so are the news reports coming from that area, clearly biased towards the Palestineans. The very same news reports you are led to believe.

4000 years of history has proven time and time again that YAHWEH will never allow any power or nation to destroy this tiny little nation. She has literally been brought back from the dead fulfilling an age old prophecy as foretold by the Prophet Ezekiel and others. Any power or nation raising a hand against ISRAEL will be destroyed. It is sad to see that the world has not learnt this lesson in 4000 years of world history. But then again, GOD'S WORD REIGNS...when the world is aligned together against ISRAEL, GODS fury shall come up in HIS face !!!... You cannot go against GODS WORD and win...just leave ISRAEL alone...

  • Matt :-) - 2011-08-29 11:19

Just to add another Israel topic here. I hear that the only thing stopping the Jews from rebuilding the Temple is that they haven't retrieved the Ark of the Covenant yet; I also hear that it HAS been discovered over 20 years ago at Jeremiah's cave and the High Rabbis know of its location, but are holding the info back because they know it'd start WW3 (seeing how rebuilding the Temple requires the demolition of the Dome of the Rock, even though there's empty land nearby... ai). Also interesting is that on the Ark, they found blood stains that had dripped through from above, thought to be Jesus's blood (but cannot be proven) and DNA tests showed the blood to be about 2000 years old... all interesting stuff to read about! The story goes that when they excavated the cave, which had been sealed up with little rocks, there was a narrow cave; an Arab worker climbed up one, shot back down and ran out screaming "I quit". When the leader (Ron Wyatt) went up and shone a torch, he saw the Ark and opened it (big no-no for Jews who believe that causes instant death); the 10 Commandments were in there but the manna and Aaron's staff had rotted away. He told the authorities who confirmed it was the Ark, but declined to make it public knowledge as it would mean fulfilling their requirements to rebuild their Temple, which would cause war for sure, so they're keeping it stumm. Also heard of accounts of visitors to the Rabbis who confirmed to them they knew about it...
