Israel gives nuclear-free summit a miss

2012-09-20 15:01

Jerusalem - Israel will not attend a conference on the creation of a nuclear-free Middle East scheduled to take place in Finland, a foreign ministry spokesperson said on Thursday.

"This announcement was made on Wednesday in Vienna during a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by the director of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission, Shaul Horev," spokesperson Yigal Palmor said.

The announcement was first reported by Haaretz newspaper, which said Horev cited the "volatile and hostile situation" in the region in explaining Israel's decision to stay away.

The conference is scheduled to take place either later this year or early in 2013, and is backed by the United States.

Horev reportedly told the IAEA meeting that a nuclear-free Middle East "will be possible only after the establishment of peace and trust among the states of the area, as a result of a local initiative, not of external coercion".

Earlier this year, Finnish representatives travelled to Israel in a bid to convince the Jewish state to attend the meeting which comes as the world grapples with the standoff over Iran's nuclear programme.

Israel and much of the international community believes Iran's nuclear programme masks a weapons drive, a charge denied by Tehran, which says its activities are for civilian nuclear energy and medical purposes.

Israel, the Middle East's sole if undeclared nuclear power, has said it will not rule out unilateral military action against Tehran to prevent it from developing a weapon.

The Jewish state is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which governs and restricts the development of nuclear technology, though it has IAEA membership. Other non-signatories include India and Pakistan.

Yes they will give it a miss. They own nearly as much nuclear WMD as the USA and have never signed any nuclear proliferation act. The rest of the world had to.....so what makes them so special?? By the way.. Iran doen not have any nuclear weapons.

The Iranian regime adjusts elections to hold onto power. It has stolen the Iranian government from the Iranian people. It funds the Jihadist movement that has killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of innocent people, mainly Muslims in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere. It is supporting Bashar Assad's brutal oppression of Syrians wanting nothing more than the right to vote. It supports the stoning of women. It openly calls for the elimination of Israel and denies the Holocaust, the single biggest attempt at human genocide in human history: six million people exterminated. It is dishonest, highly repressive, and self-serving at the expense of the Iranian people. The IAEA, the same agency that tried to dissuade the US from invading Iraq, said just last week there are now clear signs the regime is moving towards developing nuclear weapons.

Stalin's Genocides was worse- ranging from at least 15 million to 30 million people. Nevertheless I agree, Iran used to be an ally until the minority government came into power, hence their allegiance to Assad. I cannot see Israel have peace without nuclear weapons- fear is the only thing keeping their enemies at bay, and if they lose that, there will be hell to pay. It will probably bring on a 3rd World war should Israel be attacked.

Gerard, did I need apartheid? F@#$k no! But it was forced on me by a christian sanctioned white minority. Islam is not being forced on you. By the way, I visited Muslim states like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman Qatar etc and believe me that it is by no means a murderous satanic society. I, like many here grew up in a murderous satanic society, and thank the Lord we overcame their tyranny. With your narrow minded, racist and Islamophobic views, i suggest you pack your bags and head for the republic of orania

      steele.oyle - 2012-09-20 16:42

      gerard, orania or Dubai?

      gerhard.kress.3 - 2012-09-20 16:55

steele I am a well travelled man. Been in Dubai. Disappointed by the thousands of 2 roomed houses in the desert. It looks like the SA government housing schemes (just thinking about it makes me vomit) No trees. No grass. I do not know if they got water. Temperatures there are above 50C in the shade every day. Dubai has got a capitalist facade. The people, the poor are worse off than the blacks here in SA.

herr gerhard - maybe you should move to Israel. I'm sure you feel very welcome with quasi Nazi stance. Your posts have absolutely, no relevance to to any of the topics. It is pure hate speech. Herr gerhard or lemontree, whatever your name is, if you not happy here, move. The Muslims are not going anywhere.

      gerhard.kress.3 - 2012-09-20 19:25

Steele you are conveniently bypassing the stoning to death of a 19-year old woman. Must I assume you are a coward or can you not talk about it?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-20 21:23

Holdinagono, Mao's was even worse. Up to 70 million Chinese people killed in his "Cultural Revolution". Then came Communist China, a whole new era of oppression. Both Russia and China have only recently and partially emerged from those dark days. Yet some on this forum would suggest they are beacons of human rights and freedom, purveyors of democracy and all things bright and beautiful.

Would you attend if the hidden agenda, openly pursued since the day you were born, was to disempower and destroy you?

      tom.guy.37669528 - 2012-09-20 16:48

      You must be joking....

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-20 21:13

Israel was created in 1948 from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish and Palestinian people, and Palestine 43%. Most of the Israeli territory was the Negev Desert. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. Palestinians with their unelected, self-serving neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they even invaded Israel twice. Full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what some wrongly call "occupied territories". There have been almost daily attacks by Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. Children. Kindergarten. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. Israel defends herself. Yes sometimes going too far, which is unacceptable, but self-defense nonetheless. There's no "joke" there. It's the plain truth. You just have to inform yourself from the right sources, not the popular street rhetoric plied by the very unelected dictators abusing the Palestinians for their own internal political purposes.

      tom.guy.37669528 - 2012-09-21 16:22

Thanks for the history lesson Freddy, I feel so sorry for poor little Israel now :(

  • alex.nkosi.39 - 2012-09-20 15:49

Yeah, israel has the right no to attend that conference, ate the same iran has the right to obtain the weopons of mass destruction and nuclear as well, the world is in danger from aparatheid state of israel and fatal terrorists of iran, so imagine just using these weopons, millions of civilian will be lost, so nuclear disarmament on these two irresponsible regimes would be necessary.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-20 16:01

Clearly, you don't have a clear picture of who the Iranian regime is and what they do. I recommend informing yourself. You're supporting brutal oppression and chauvinism worse even than the Apartheid regime.

  • goldd.goldfinger - 2012-09-20 16:04

Dont these guys have nuclear weapons? and isnt their country in the Middle East?, or is it that they are special and no rules international or not apply to them..must be that

      Raymon - 2012-09-20 16:07

      Yes, and yes and no.

      jaba.kov - 2012-09-20 16:37

The Nuclear Arsenal of Israel (which I do believe is there) is the Insurance Policy for her survival in the most aggressive and precarious neighbourhood on our planet. My home has dogs, electric fencing, alarms and a big gun in the safe for the simple reason that my neighbourhood is plagued by violent crime (Morningside). Israel feels the same I guess. Millions of Israel’s’ cousins have called for her annihilation…

      joe.mase.7 - 2012-09-20 19:13

@Jaba - glad to see you using the correct terminology, Arabs, cousins etc. thank you. Israel nuclear arms give them an insurance policy, Iran wants a life policy. I think an Iranian Nuclear Power is essential for the region. This is my opinion. You don't have to agree. You feel threatened in Morningside; your ME neighbours feel the same way about Israel. How do you re-assure them that your intentions for peace are genuine?

      joe.mase.7 - 2012-09-21 00:17

@Fred - Clearly, YOU have it upside down. I wasn't talking to you. I do not talk to cut & paste.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-21 06:19

It's an open forum, Joe. If you are not talking to me, then you shouldn't be posting here. You have it upside down because you see the Iranian regime as needing an insurance policy. The election-riggin, woman-stoning, Jihadist-funding, Holocaust-denying, Palestinian-abusing Iranian regime.

  • tom.guy.37669528 - 2012-09-20 16:52

So basically there are a whole lot of ignorant racists who feel Israel is threatened by a sea of brown people, haha, people these days need to get out more.

      jaba.kov - 2012-09-20 17:09

      You must be joking....

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-20 21:16

Or one uninformed person who has the story upside down.

  • tumelo.mphahlele.5 - 2012-09-20 17:05

    Surprising? No!\r\nHypocracy? Yes!

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-20 21:16

Confused? Yes. Wrong? Yes. Again? Yes.

  • juannepierre - 2012-09-20 17:12

Too many Muslims are killed in the name of Islam, why would Israel not be eliminated by muslims? Blasphemy, homosexuality and adultery are punishable by death in Muslim countries, and these are their own people. If i were in Israel I would be skeptical too.

  • jojo.balela.1 - 2012-09-20 22:09

Israel does not need the IAEA telling it what to do. They can take their treaty and stuff it ... In Iran :) no one tells Israel what to do!

  • hannah.p.mostert - 2012-09-20 22:32

The greatest thing for a Muslim is to kill a Jew they think they will be revered by Allah, the Muslims in the middle east state this fact all the time. Israel defends herself she doesn't want to go out and kill Muslims, I have never heard a Jewish person say I will be a better person if I kill a Muslim never.
