Israel orders settlers out of Hebron house

2012-04-02 16:10
Hebron - The Israeli military has ordered Jewish settlers to evacuate a building they occupied last week in the heart of the most volatile city in the West Bank.

Settlers say about 10 families entered the building in the city of Hebron after legally purchasing it from a Palestinian land owner.

The military says this claim is not true. An army spokesperson said on Monday the settlers must evacuate to keep the public order and because they did not obtain army authorisation to occupy the house.

The military set a deadline of Tuesday afternoon for the 70 or so people inside to get out.

About 500 Jewish settlers live in heavily guarded enclaves among 180 000 Palestinians in Hebron, home to a key shrine holy to both Muslims and Jews.
