Tel Aviv - The Israeli security forces have arrested 30 Palestinians who they say plotted to carry out a series of attacks, including bombing the Jerusalem tram line and a football stadium in the city, authorities announced on Thursday.

The arrests were made in September, according to the Shin Bet internal security agency which charged that those arrested were part of a Hamas cell operating from Turkey.

The security forces said they found explosive devices and automatic weapons in the suspects' possession.

The Palestinians are men in their 20s and 30s and mostly live in the West Bank, though some last resided in Arab nations in the region, according to the information released.

There was no immediate comment from the Islamist Hamas movement, which controls the Gaza Strip.

The information emerged amid growing tensions between Palestinians and Israeli security forces around Jerusalem and the West Bank, focused on contested holy sites and the expansion of Jewish settlements.
