Israel urges tougher action against Assad

2012-05-30 15:15

Jerusalem - Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak called on Wednesday for tougher world action against Bashar al-Assad, saying he doubted the Syrian president "lost an hour's sleep" over the expulsion of his envoys from several capitals after the Houla massacre.

"These events in Syria compel the world to take action, not just talk, but action. These are crimes against humanity and the international community must not stand on the sidelines," Barak said in a speech at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv.

Barak welcomed the expulsion on Tuesday of Syrian diplomats from at least seven Western capitals, describing it as a "very important step in the right direction" after the killing of more than 100 civilians in the Syrian town of Houla.

But he said: "I don't think that Assad lost an hour's sleep last night because of those people leaving ... and more concrete action is required."

Barak did not specify what additional steps he wanted the West to take.

Although Israel and Syria are technically at war, Israeli leaders have rarely censured the Assad government for its domestic crackdowns and initially said little about the uprising that erupted last year against Assad.

The Syrian leader is widely viewed in Israel as emulating his late father, president Hafez al-Assad, in seeking to maintain decades of calm along a ceasefire line on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, captured from Syria in a 1967 war.

The world needs to take tougher action against Israeli land stealing and belligerence! BDS NOW!!

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 16:12

The usual bellwether for wrong thinking. Thanks for the marker Fidel. What does BDS mean?

      Deon - 2012-05-30 16:32

You forgot that Israel was attacked in 1967, took the land in defense.

      razz.tazz.9 - 2012-05-30 16:45

Well said Fidel. They are the biggest crimminal in the world go see them in Miami what they do. Destroying Western Africa for Black Diamonds. They the biggest perpetrators of war crimes. Stole the ground of poor families in Palestine, thugs......

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 17:23

Razz, while you're ranting your inaccurate perspective based on faulty populist beliefs, innocent Muslims are being slaughtered wholesale by the Jihadists and unelected dictators in your midsts. Are you going to say or do anything about this?

      Larry - 2012-05-30 19:48

No worries Fidel. We will invent a cure for your sickness as well. Israel brims with humanity. One wonders if Israeli citizens would elicit the same concern from her neighbours if they were being slaughtered by their own government. Israel will continue to grind the Pestinians underfoot, until they and supporters like this Fidel disease come to the realisation that, wrong or right, the Arab world and Pestinians in particular, accept Israel's terms for peace. Failing which, we dont care and they must continue to be oppressed. Easy. nobody wins until Israel wins.

  • Jaba - 2012-05-30 16:02

over 30 countries have called for tougher action against Assad, the butcher of Damascus. Its pathetic that the media only ever focus on Israel. The propaganda machine against Israel is very sad - and will never lead to peace. It will only divide the two sides.

  • zaakiro - 2012-05-30 16:08

What a joke, what Syria are doing is unacceptable an Assad should definitely be accountable. But for Israel to come out an say "crimes against humanity" they should be ashamed of themselves. They have been killing INNOCENT children, bombing SCHOOL and HOSPITALS. I bet many countries will agree with this sick joke of a defence minister when he says "the world to take action, not just talk, but action". But all those Presidents & Ministers who agree with him are afraid to take the same action against the Occupied Forces in Palestine. Talk about crimes against humanity, talk about having a peaceful night sleep....how do you sleep MR.Ehud Barak when your soldiers are raping women, killing children who have only small stone an rocks to defend themselves, killing old men & women who have nothing but their wisdom. How do you sleep at night when bombs are falling on homes, when children are being separated from their parents. How do you sleep at night when thousands of men & women are jailed for no reason other than the power of their minds and because they have intellectually challenged your regime. How do you sleep at night when medical centers aren't allowed enough treatment. How do you sleep? Muslim, Jew or Christian....a life is something precious. Should a 7year old boy have his leg amputated because his a Muslim? Should a young girl loose her eye sight because she's a Muslim? People are killed as if their lives mean nothing...ZERO Accountability

      Marc - 2012-05-30 16:15

Do you ask the same questions when your brothers blow up innocent men, women and children with their suicide bomb attacks? Why must the children of Israel suffer that? Idiot!

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 16:17

One line on Assad's actions, and a diatribe of incorrect and highly prejudiced thoughts about Israel.

      zaakiro - 2012-05-30 16:19

If you make a little effort an read correctly instead of insulting someone with word likes "idiot", you would see i say that every life has value regardless of religion (Muslim, Jews, Christians) Children shouldn't suffer anywhere....

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 16:19

Everyone with a clear mind who's been following this story knows it is Palestinians who unfortunately do not recognize the right of Israel to even exist and attack Israel almost daily. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack her. The very next day after Israel was created by the international community in 1947, Palestinians with their unelected autocratic backers in the region have waged war on her. They attack Israel and when Israel defends herself, they play the victim and martyr. It's a tragic game of self-inflicted pain to garner pity and sympathy which you fall for. All Palestinians have to do is choose peace side by side with Israel. Until you realize this, you're only harming the Palestinians, not helping them.

      razz.tazz.9 - 2012-05-30 16:52

Marc...Why don't you comment when your brothers are bombing innocent families homes with TANKERS. According to your statement they blow up people, imagine what will they do should they have artillery like your brothers, idiot...

      Fidel - 2012-05-30 16:53

Fred, have you no shame, spouting the same rubbish on thread after thread, word for word. Are you a Sock puppetry?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 17:05

This is factual Fidel. Sorry that you can no longer spread your lies in this Information Age. Anyone can verify it with a few clicks of their browser, provided they go to unbiased sources.

      Larry - 2012-05-30 20:11

The situation in Israel/Palestine is no different to these comments. Pro-Pestinians are attacking and Pro-Israeli's are defending. Zaakarino is an emotional wreck, suffering from deep humiliation psychosis, brought about by the realisation that his religion and god is proving to be weak and ineffective against the Jews. Shame. We will have to find a cure for you as well.

      Iqbal - 2012-05-30 21:57

Larry my boy, another worthless comment from the peanut (brain) gallery? Thank goodness people don't take you seriously.

      Larry - 2012-05-30 22:12

That's OK Iqbal. I was born into the winning team. Keep up the good fight.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-31 15:20

Iqbal, again, you don't speak for anyone other than yourself, notwithstanding what your Ego tells you

  • faaiza.paruk - 2012-05-30 16:14

What action shall be taken against Israel for killing innocent women and children???

      goyougoodthing - 2012-05-30 16:28

You are not allowed to ask those questions. Since the Jews were subject to the holocaust they can't be wrong, ever again. It's like after apartheid no black person can be a racist.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 16:53

Unfortunately women and children are not innocent when they attack Israel. Palestinians teach their children to do this at Kindergarten.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-05-30 16:57

      Fred you are deplorable.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 17:09

Unfortunately it's the truth. Goodthing, unfortunately you believe the US attacked itself on 9/11, the CIA invaded Afghanistan in the 1980's not the Soviet Union, central banks are arms of private banks not governments, and the Rothschilds of all people are the source of evil in our world. Clearly, you have distorted world affairs and hold a distorted world view.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-30 18:32

Goyougoodthing, You used to have a photo of yourself with your girlfriend, Than she left you...... Now you got your penis hanging out of your trousers! Have you got some kind of a problem ??

      Larry - 2012-05-30 20:17

The only action that will work, Faaiza, is the recognition and acceptance of Israel, along with peaceful behaviour and intentions. You will be amazed at the amount of good that Israel can bring to the region. Starting with freedom and democracy and then leading to growing human capital, education and wealth, healthcare etc. All those good things we take for granted in SA and other first world countries which the poor Middle eastern Arab countries long for. Why do you think the Arab spring happened, and is happening in Syria as we speak. Give peace a chance people.

      Jaba - 2012-05-31 09:34

Israeli self defense is only a crime in the book of racist Muslims. How DARE Israel protect their people you say? well Israel sends you the middle finger (with love).

      Sharon - 2012-06-17 16:17

who fires rockets on a regular basis, who sends human bombs across the border on an ongoing basis, faaiza you must be really stupid if you think israel wont retaliate when the mozzies do this, stop firing rockets and israel will stop killing the enemy.tell me are your bombers all male and over 18,if not then there are also women and children involved

  • Tim - 2012-05-30 16:21

Lol!!Why fight your enemy when you can get your friends to destroy it for you?

      Larry - 2012-05-30 20:20

Israel does not want any enemies. It wants to have its own place in the sun without being under constant threat of attack. Until this occurs, israels enemies will be on notice, and the Pestinians in particular will be a stateless and marginalised people. Not negotiable.

  • Tim - 2012-05-30 16:27

@Mark. And how do you feel about your brothers killing millions of innocent people in wars over the centuries? the extermination of the American Indians? the Aborigines? the drone strikes killing civilians, the shooting down of the Iran Air jet flight 655 killing 290 innocent people?

      Fidel - 2012-05-30 16:54

Every civilian they kill is "accidental", how can you not know that?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 17:00

The difference is its unintentional. And when it happens it's treated with deep concern, followed up with corrective strategies.

      Larry - 2012-05-30 20:25

Completely unlike the intentional slaughter of Syrian civilians by their own government, or the throwing to their deaths off rooftops of Fatah opposition leaders when Hamas forced their way to power in Gaza. Jewish Israel is a shining light compared to the murderous darkness of the Muslim Arabs in their dealings with themselves. Israel will show the way. Freedom and democracy will squash this rabid Islamic fascism.

      Sharon - 2012-06-17 16:19

the same as you feel with your people murdering millions in rwanda

  • Tim - 2012-05-30 16:47

@Deon. Forget Israel was attacked in 1967. Do you know how Israel was created? How it was stolen from the native population of Muslims and Christians(SURPRISE!!!).Someone walks into your house, takes over your land. What do YOU do? DO you just say "Here take over boss?" or would you fight for what is rightfully yours??

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 17:17

You are factually incorrect. Israel was created from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish people, most of which was the Negev Desert, and the Palestine 43%. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. The Palestinians with their unelected autocratic neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they invaded Israel twice, full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what you call the occupied territories, with the faulty populist slant you choose to put on this term. There have been almost daily attacks by the Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. All that needs to happen is for Palestinians to choose peace side by side with Israel. This is more likely going forward because the unelected dictators ate being deposed one by one. They will no longer use the Palestininans for their own political reasons.

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-05-30 17:17

Isreal much like the rest of the region was created out of the fragments of the Ottoman empire through the League of Nations and then the newly formed UN .

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 17:25

That should be: Israel was created from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish people and Palestinians, most of which was the Negev Desert, and Palestine 43%. Jerusalem fell into neither territory.

  • wayne.bayman - 2012-05-30 17:20

I'm so happy that I'm not religious. Jews, Muslims and Christians have the same god. the same prophets. the same holy places. All three those religions (and their followers) are idiots for fighting in the first place.

      Larry - 2012-05-30 20:29

The difference is that Israel is not fighting, it is defending itself. If everyone left Israel alone, there would be no fighting.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-05-30 21:09

Israel is fighting, its all they do.

      Larry - 2012-05-30 21:55

Not true. Even here, I am defending, while you are fighting. A losing battle I might add.

  • Dragan - 2012-05-30 19:54

Fred furthering your comment made to Goyougoodthing. In your opinion is the Central bank of America (the US federal reserve) privately owned or government owned..?? I'm very interested in hearing your answer to this P.S if you could point out the same for the South African reserve bank I would be most grateful.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 19:57

Central banks are arms of government, not private banks. Governments exercise monetary policy through them.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 20:01

There is a debate ongoing now whether private banks should be represented on the boards of central banks. These representatives have historically been included, to assist governments in the formulation of monetary policy. The question is now rightly being asked, in light of the recent financial melt-down, whether they were effective in their roles.

      Dragan - 2012-05-30 20:44

Fred you still have not answered the question. Does the govt own the Fed or is it privately owned?

      goyougoodthing - 2012-05-30 21:12

Fred will not admit that they are private and invent money which they then lend at face value interest, creating a debt from which none can overcome. They are firstly illegal according to the US constitution and yet the Fed has existed, in it's 3rd reincarnation, since 1913. The face that the SA reserve states on its website that it is private does not deter Fred.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 21:58

The question is answered. They are arms of government, not the private banks.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 22:00

Goodthing, who prints the money that is then circulated in the economy? The government of course, not the private banks.

      Dragan - 2012-05-30 22:09

Yes he is very mum indeed.. @ Goyougoodthing Ditto what you said. also most people think our taxes go to paying for services. It is not so.. Most of our taxes actually are used to pay back the interest charged by the central banks for the money they printed. (Most of the central banks are actually owned by the major global private banks) Thus Governments in order to fulfill services must borrow more money from the central bank at more interest.. the cycle goes on and on and on, hence the ever expanding US debt ceiling.. All this achieves is a robbing of the wealth of the people through the hidden tax called inflation because the money supply continually increases.. the financial system viciously sucks the wealth of its host nation and moves on. Argentina, Greece, The Euro, the financial meltdown (ironically banking powerhouses made record profits during financial meltdown).. This is the grace commission report Issued by president Ronald Reagan. He was shot for this and nearly killed I believe as a result. " The report said that one-third of all income taxes is consumed by waste and inefficiency in the federal government, and another one-third escapes collection owing to the underground economy. “With two thirds of everyone’s personal income taxes wasted or not collected, 100 percent of what is collected is absorbed solely by interest on the federal debt and by federal government " Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Grace_Commission

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 22:14

Woefully misinformed. Central banks are not owned by the global banks. They're arms of government. However, when governments borrow excessively, because of excessive spending, their interest bill goes up. Just like you and me. This interest goes to bond holders, which are mainly foreign countries. Governments do borrow from private banks as well, and pay interest to these banks on those borrowings.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 22:16

"This is the grace commission report Issued by president Ronald Reagan. He was shot for this and nearly killed I believe as a result." Hahahaha!! What are you thinking? John Hinckley Jnr, who was mentally ill, shot Reagan.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 22:18

Anyway, you guys are obviously free to believe whatever you choose to believe. However, the more you believe this conspiratorial nonsense, the less effective you are, and the more you waste your lives.
