Tel Aviv - The Israeli military says it has opened criminal investigations into two high-profile cases involving Palestinian civilian casualties in this summer's Gaza war.

Wednesday's announcement is likely an attempt to head off international investigations into the military's conduct during the 50-day conflict.

More than 2 100 Palestinians, three-quarters of whom were civilians, were killed in the fighting, according to Palestinian and UN estimates.

Israel says the number of militants killed is much higher and accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields. On the Israeli side, 66 soldiers and six civilians died.

A senior Israeli officer involved in the probes says they would investigate the killing of Palestinian children on a Gaza beach and the shelling of a United Nations school.

The officer spoke on condition of anonymity under military regulations.
