Rome - An anti-Mafia sweep on Wednesday netted 20 suspects in Sicily and another six in New York and Miami, the Ansa news agency reported.
The operation co-ordinated by prosecutors in Palermo with support from the FBI was aimed at halting the activities of the Santa Maria di Gesu clan, which is based in the Sicilian capital Palermo and has branches in the US.
The suspects are accused of drug trafficking, attempted murder, money laundering and extortion in an investigation that began nearly two years ago, Ansa said.
Clan leaders Gioacchino and Giampaolo Corso, who are brothers, were arrested in Palermo.
FBI agents arrested six people in Miami and New York, aided by Italian police agents who had arrived several days earlier.
Weapons were seized during the arrests, as well as documents including a list of people targeted for extortion, Ansa said.
