Amman - Demonstrators clashed with Jordanian security forces as hundreds attempted to storm the Israeli embassy late on Wednesday in Amman in protest of ongoing Israeli military strikes in the Gaza Strip.

Anti-riot police clashed with some 300 Islamist and leftist protestors marching toward the Israeli diplomatic mission in west Amman.

About 10 rioters broke free of a police barricade, threw a barrage of stones and attempted to scale the Israeli mission before being subdued and arrested, according to security sources.

Raising Palestinian flags and Hamas banners, protestors called on Amman to cut ties with the Israeli government, chanting "at the doors of the embassy, we will launch the third intifada".

Protestors called for scrapping the two-decade-old Wadi Araba peace treaty between Jordan and Israel, chanting "no to Wadi Araba, yes to justice".

Further clashes erupted after ralliers began chanting "Freedom from God, down with Abdullah" and other slogans critical of King Abdullah II, a key Western ally who has maintained ties with Israel.

The Jordanian government issued multiple statements on Wednesday condemning the Israeli military campaign and calling on Israeli authorities to "immediately stop" the barrage in Gaza.
More than 50 Palestinians have been reported killed since Tuesday.
