Amman - Jordan has taken emergency measures to face potential threats of a chemical weapons attack near the border or pending Western-led strikes against Syria.

"We are concerned about the use of chemical weapons of mass destruction. ... This is an issue of serious concern to us particularly due to Syria's geographic proximity," government spokesperson Mohammed Momani said.

"We are taking all steps necessary should the Syrian government fail to keep its challenges within its borders," Momani added, but refused to elaborate what actions Amman would consider should it be deemed that Damascus's chemical weapons pose a threat to Jordan.

Momani also dismissed reports of an alleged US-Jordanian military buildup along the Syrian border, saying that Washington "has not contacted" Jordan to take part in any military intervention.

"We will not be taking part in any military action or any coalition of the willing," Momani says, stressing Amman's support for a peaceful political solution to the conflict in Syria.
