Karzai urges Taliban to stop fighting

2011-05-02 13:03

Kabul - Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Monday called on Taliban guerrillas to learn a lesson from the death of Osama bin Laden and stop fighting against his US-backed administration.

"We call on Taliban to learn from what happened yesterday and stop fighting," he said, reacting to the death of bin Laden in a US operation near the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.

"Talib, come to your country and stop the fighting and leave the weapon that the foreigners have put on your shoulders," he said, addressing Taliban, the main militant group fighting an insurgency aimed at toppling Karzai.
