Srinagar - Five police officers were wounded on Tuesday when a bomb they were trying to defuse exploded in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

Inspector-General Abdul Gani Mir said all of the injured policemen had been hospitalised and were in stable condition.

The incident occurred in Srinagar, the main city in Indian-held Kashmir.

The bomb disposal squad was defusing explosives seized during a recent clash between troops and rebels, Mir said.

Separately, clashes erupted in southern Anantnag town on Tuesday after residents found the body of a young man who they say was picked up overnight by police and killed in custody.

Police fired tear gas to disperse rock-throwing protesters who were chanting anti-police and pro-freedom slogans.

A police officer speaking on customary condition of anonymity denied that police had detained the man.

Police said in a statement that preliminary reports suggested that there was no mark of violence on the man's body.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan.

Both countries claim the region in its entirety.

Since 1989, more than 68 000 people have been killed in a militant uprising and subsequent Indian crackdown in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir.

Rebels are fighting for the region's independence or merger with Pakistan.
