Seoul - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has made his first public appearance in weeks, official news reports said on Tuesday.

Kim toured new residential quarters for scientists and an energy institute of the Academy of Sciences, the official Rodong Sinmun reported, showing photographs of the leader walking with a cane.

The report did not say when the visit occurred.

Kim, reckoned to be in his early 30s, had not previously been seen since 3 September, including at two public ceremonies he would normally have been expected to attend.

Pyongyang state media last month mentioned his "discomfort", and Western media have speculated that he may have high blood pressure or gout, due to his fondness for rich foods, in particular cheese.

But the North Korean diplomatic envoy to London said there was "no doubt" that the leader was in good health, the BBC reported on Monday.
