Lebanon skier 'hit by gunfire from Syria'

Rashaya - One person was wounded when a group of skiers on Mount Hermon in southeast Lebanon came under machinegun fire from across the border with Syria on Monday, a security official said.

It was the first cross-border shooting in that part of Lebanon, although Syrian regime forces have opened fire several times in recent months, on one occasion killing a Lebanese television cameraman.

In Monday's incident, four of the skiers were Lebanese and one was Swiss, the security official said.

"They were shot at using light machineguns from across the Syrian side of the border," he said.

One of the Lebanese was hit and taken to hospital for treatment. The army was questioning the rest of the group about the shooting, the source added.

In previous such shootings, Syrian forces have said they were targeting armed rebels and people crossing illegally into the strife-torn country.

On 9 April, Al-Jadeed satellite television channel said Syrian soldiers shot dead cameraman Ali Shaaban, saying they opened fire on the TV crew which was on Lebanon's side of the border.

Mount Hermon on the Lebanese-Syrian frontier also borders the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Simply unnacceptable - it's about time the Lebanese do something about it. It's a flagarent violation of international law to shoot across borders for ANY REASON WHATSOEVER - and the Lebanese must protect the integrity of their borders. Same goes for Turkey.

I agree with the sentiment, but don't forget that Lebanon was easily invaded by Syria.

If these people are Muslim, then the Holy Quran states clearly that it is time for them to lay down their weapons. "And oft in the past, Have I destroyed gangs like unto you: then Is there any that Will receive admonition? These are God's words. All over this world there are gangs and rebels in the Human Form, causing havoc, shedding Human Blood as if shedding of animal blood is not enough! I pray to the One True Living God, that this violence will stop and these demons be banished into the fires of Hell as stated in the Holy Quran. It further states: This is the Book, and None shall touch it, except those who are clean. Now this Clean has a very deep meaning, apart from being clean as in bathing. May God Have Mercy On the Victims and their families. May the Souls of the murdered, rest in peace. Amen
