Wellington - A former Malaysian diplomat accused of sexual assault was granted bail in Wellington on Tuesday.

Muhammad Rizalman Ismail, aged 38, was working as a defence staff assistant at the Malaysian High Commission in Wellington when he was arrested on 9 May for allegedly assaulting a 21-year-old woman after following her home.

He has not yet entered a plea on charges of burglary and assault with intent to rape.

He first appeared in court the day after his arrest, but was later allowed to leave the country because of his diplomatic status.

Rizalman arrived back in the country on Friday after concerns were raised in New Zealand about the possibility of his escaping prosecution.
