Malaysia plane flying with no problems until vanishing from radar

Kiev - The Malaysian airliner which came down in eastern Ukraine on Thursday was flying normally without problems until it disappeared from radar, the head of Ukraine's airspace regulatory body said.

"The flight was taking place normally ... There had been no word of any problems from the crew," Dmytro Babeychuk said at a news conference.

There were about 300 people on board Flight MH 17.

In Wilmington, US President Barack Obama referred to it as a "terrirble tragedy".

"The world is watching reports of a downed passenger jet near the Russia/Ukraine border. And it looks like it may be a terrible tragedy," Obama said.

"The United States will offer any assistance we can to help determine what happened and why."
