Moscow - A Malaysian passenger airliner with 295 people on board crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border, Interfax cited an aviation industry source as saying on Thursday.

It said the Boeing plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Reuters could not immediately confirm the Interfax report.

Malaysia Airlines has confirmed the incident.

It is reported on SkyNews that it may have been shot down with a missile.

Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow.

It may have been shot down by either the Ukraine or Riussian air defence systems. This to be confirmed.
