Washington - A 21-year-old man was arrested in Pennsylvania on Wednesday in connection with a shooting in which a White House window was struck by a bullet, the US secret service said.

Oscar Ortega-Hernandez was arrested by state police at a hotel near Indiana, Pennsylvania, the secret service special agent in charge, Edwin Donovan, said.

"On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 12:35 (17:35 GMT), based on information generated by secret service agents from the Pittsburgh field office, Pennsylvania state police troop A located and arrested Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez at a hotel near Indiana, Pennsylvania," Donovan said in a statement.

"Ortega-Hernandez is currently in the custody of the Pennsylvania state police," it said.

Earlier, Donovan said Ortega-Hernandez was being sought after gunshots were heard on Friday night near the White House.

A bullet was found Monday impacted in the ballistic glass of an exterior window of the White House, and a second bullet was found outside the US presidential residence.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were outside Washington at the time.
