Man catches girl after 3-storey fall

2012-07-17 19:40

New York - A New York bus driver has become a surprise hero after saving a 7-year-old girl who accidentally fell three storeys from a Brooklyn apartment building.

"I just said 'Please, let me catch her, lord, please let me catch her," Stephen St Bernard told local NY1 television about Monday's rescue in the Brooklyn's Coney Island neighbourhood.

A video of the incident taken on a mobile phone and broadcast by the channel showed the girl standing on an air conditioning unit outside her apartment window more than 10m from the ground.

Amid cries from people watching the scene unfold from the ground, the girl fell into the arms of St Bernard.

"I ran over there hoping that she wouldn't fall. When I got there, she was still standing there and I just positioned myself," he said.

"When she lost her balance, I caught her. She has no scratches or anything. She's okay."

St Bernard, who said he cried after saving the girl, suffered a torn tendon in his arm from the impact.

The girl has been identified as Keyla McCree. Her mother had left her alone in the room moments before, according to the New York Post.

"The little girl lives in Brooklyn with her mother and brother. The mom was watching her son when the daughter decided to go out the window and dance on the air conditioner." This is great news and am glad that the little girl and the hero did not get too hurt. One question though-how did the girl come to be standing on an air-conditioner unit OUTSIDE her flat 10 meters above the ground? Was this a suicide attempt?I do not think this is parent neglect-this girl is 7 years old and the story says the parent left her alone MOMENTS before she went on her adventure-I don't think you need 2 eyeballs on a 7 year old 24/7 (unless the mother left her to go on a long trip or something similay)There is a part of the story that's missing here.

God answers prayer, and sometimes he uses a St Bernard. What a wonderful surname for a rescuer. How brave, and unselfish - he deserves a medal, but he will get his satisfaction from saving a young life. Well done Mr St Bernard. I hope his arm recovers from injury.
