Man dies in fall after FB party

2010-05-14 17:10
Nantes - A 21-year-old man who fell from a bridge after leaving a huge party in western France organised on Facebook died on Thursday, authorities said, prompting concern over such gatherings.

The man had left the party in Nantes, one of several in recent months organised on the social networking site and which included up to 10 000 people, and walked on a bridge, where he fell 5m on his head.

Police said friends who were with him immediately called for help. Prosecutors in Nantes said the man, a construction worker, suffered serious head and chest injuries. Toxicology tests were underway.

Previous such "aperos geants" (giant cocktail hours) have drawn concern over binge drinking.

One party in November 2009 resulted in 50 alcohol-induced comas and falls into the Loire river, prompting local officials to warn organisers.

Officials in Nantes had banned alcohol sales in a large section of the city centre in anticipation of Wednesday night's party and nearly 400 police were mobilised.

Forty-one people were detained for offences ranging from drug trafficking to violence.

Another party organised on Facebook was held on Wednesday night in the southern city of Montpellier, where nearly 10 000 also gathered.

The Champ de Mars plaza located in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris will be the site of another party on May 23.
