Acapulco - Police acting without warrants and in a violent manner detained 25 people in connection with the rape of six Spanish tourists, although most were later released, a community leader said on Saturday.

Residents fear the arbitrary detentions will continue, said Adrian Sanchez, a community leader in Lomas de Chapultepec, near the part of Acapulco where the women were raped on Monday by five armed men wearing masks.

Sanchez said that of the 25 people rounded up, two were minors. After most were released, including those two, five remained in custody, he said.

Sanchez said he had filed a formal complaint with the human rights commission of Guerrero state, which includes the once-glitzy resort of Acapulco.

He said police tried to get a brother in law of his, one of those ultimately released, to confess to taking part in the sexual assaults of the Spanish women in a beach bungalow. A Mexican woman with tourists was spared. Seven Spanish men that were part of the group were tied up while the rapes were committed.

One of the men still detained has a fractured hand and is bleeding from the right ear, Sanchez said.

Prosecutors in Guerrero have kept mum over how the investigation into the rapes is going, and declined to comment on the complaint filed on Saturday by Sanchez.

Last week authorities questioned eight people but stressed that they had not been detained.
