Men who buy sex commit more crimes

2011-07-20 21:40

Boston - Men who pay for sex are more likely than men who do not pay for sex to commit a variety of offences including violent crimes against women, according to research conducted in the Boston area.

The study, released this week, was based on interviews with 202 men conducted by the non-profit group Prostitution Research and Education and was led by Melissa Farley, a clinical psychologist and anti-prostitution activist.

Buyers and non-buyers of commercial sex from the Boston area were paired by age, education and ethnicity to compare their perceptions of women after voluntarily joining the study. About half the men paid for sex and the other half did not.

Men who paid for sex were more likely to report having committed felonies and misdemeanours, including crimes related to violence against women and those related to substance abuse, assault and weapons, the study found.

The study was designed, among other things, to test attitudes of men who buy sex. It found that as a group, they share certain attitudes and behavioural tendencies different from their non-buying peers.

Almost three in four of the sex buyers reported they learned about sex from pornography, whereas only 54% of the non-buyers did so.

The two groups also held significantly different attitudes regarding whether prostitution was consenting sex or exploitation. Men who bought sex were significantly less empathetic toward women working as prostitutes.

Two thirds of both groups concluded most women prostitutes had been lured, tricked or trafficked into the work.

But sex buyers "seemed to justify their involvement in the sex industry by stating their belief... that women in prostitution were intrinsically different from non-prostituting women," the study's authors said.

The majority of both groups, 61% of sex buyers and 70% of non-buyers, currently had a wife or girlfriend.

That's because men who pay for sex are more likely to objectify women as sexual objects than men who are in a committed relationship or choose to be in one as opposed to only having sex.

Men and woman are not equal. Men do not run against woman in the 100m. Men cannot fall pregnant.

What a load of poo. Perhaps the next survey they could use more than 200 volunteer's. Just a thought...

Wow, groundbreaking research here! And what a massive and representative sample-size, 202 men, all from Boston and all consenting to be in a study! Next time the obvious institute think of doing another study, give me half the money and I'll report the findings.

A bad study, badly conducted in an area of the US which is conservative. Sad

      Norma - 2011-07-21 02:08

And of course, the fact that she is a rabid anti- prostitution, anti- pornography activist has NOTHING to do with the results of her 'study' right? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melissa_Farley Melissa Farley From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Melissa Farley Born 1942 Residence San Francisco Nationality American Fields Psychology Institutions Prostitution Research and Education 1996– Kaiser Foundation Research Institute (Oakland, CA), 1993–2000 Alma mater University of Iowa (Ph.D., Counseling Psychology, 1973) San Francisco State University (MS, Clinical Psychology, 1966) Mills College (BA, Psychology, 1964) Known for Research on the effects of prostitution, sexual abuse, and violence against women[1] Melissa Farley (born 1942) is an American clinical psychologist and researcher[1][2][3] and feminist anti-pornography and anti-prostitution activist.[4][5] Farley is best known for her studies of the effects of prostitution, trafficking, and sexual violence." If cops and judges would stop raping and extorting us, there would be far less violence against us... know what I mean?

Well done Norma for pointing that out. BTW ZAZomentator, Boston is on the East Coast not Alabama. The South and Mid West are the redneck fundie strongholds.

Why I don't commit any crime?? Haha, what a corny nurdy lot of tripe! I think it's obvious, men who are in a relationship, but cheat tend to be untrustworthy in general, that's why they cheat, so I think this study is "shaped" to serve as some form of zombie manipulation.

I am sure she must have had Judge Albert "Pat" Murdoch in mind when she talks about men who buy sex more inclined to commit other crimes.... from today (July 20, 2011) comes this story: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-20081158-504083.html "(CBS/KRQE/AP) ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico District Judge Albert "Pat" Murdoch was arrested Tuesday on charges including rape and intimidation of a witness, reports CBS affiliate KRQE. A court document says a prostitute who accused Murdoch made a videotape of the alleged attack by Albuquerque's top criminal judge....Police then questioned the woman, who says Murdoch solicited her on a prostitution website. The woman says she met with the judge about eight times and he paid her $200 each time. She says he forced himself on her during one visit, but she returned and secretly recorded a second forced encounter..." This is the judge who gave a probation sentence to a cop convicted of rape.." and earlier this year sentenced a former Albuquerque police officer to probation after the officer, who was on duty at the time, was convicted of raping a suspect." So that's obviously who Melissa Farley had in mind, I am sure of it!

Someone seriously need to get Laid,,, We pay for SEX so that "she does not tell the wife/ask no Phone numbers and never has a headache,,

  • Dominic - 2011-07-21 09:05

I wonder if she evaluated the honesty of the men involved. The ones who admitted to paying for sex were more likely to be honest than the ones who didn't. Similarly their responses to other questions would have had the same bias.

      zaatheist - 2011-07-21 09:23

It certainly looks all half baked and meaningless.

  • mamakalami - 2011-07-21 09:23

Men are more visual than women - they tend to be attracted by the tangible attributes of a partner - be it female of male. So they will tend to objectify their sexual targets until they identify other non physical qualities they admire in them. As for violence and other crimes – it’s more on the level of the man's psyche than anything else. Human beings are very complex and no single study can make concrete conclusions on human nature.

      mamakalami - 2011-07-21 09:46

When I came back into the country in the 90's I lived in Hillbrow. I can say I witnessed a lot of rough and criminal incidences involving hookers. Guess it's a case of birds of a feather.

...makes sense..loose personal morals is the only reason any man commits crime..

  • montecristo - 2011-07-21 10:43

Because men who buy sex have no morals.
