Bogota - At least 12 mine workers are trapped in a flooded coal mine in north-western Columbia, local media reported on Friday.

Rescue workers said heavy rains on Thursday in the Department of Antioquia caused the collapse of a mine tunnel up to 450m deep.

Just before the accident, 36 workers had been working in the mine shaft, local administrator Carlos Amaya said. Twenty-four of them were able to escape.

Aid and government workers had already entered the mine to rescue the miners, but the accident site had no electricity to power pumps that would remove the water.

Some residents rejected the suggestion that heavy rain caused the accident, saying instead that the influx of water could have been triggered by controlled blasting inside the tunnel.
