Frankfurt - German police on Thursday seized a home-made bomb during a raid on an apartment and car in a town north of Frankfurt, officials said, likely thwarting a terrorist attack.

The state of Hesse "has succeeded in preventing a terrorist attack", said Roger Lewentz, the interior minister for the neighbouring state of Rhineland-Palatinate. He also heads the conference of state interior ministers.

But Frankfurt Deputy Prosecutor Stefan Rojczyk told dpa there was no evidence of concrete plans to launch an attack. Police also found a gun and ammunition during their search.

A 35-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman were arrested as a result of the searches, the office of Criminal Investigation (LKA) said.

German media reported that one of those detained by the police had contact with the radical Salafist movement as well as the terrorist network al-Qaeda.

The discovery of the bomb and other equipment came ahead of several major events in Germany on Friday to mark traditional May Day celebrations.

The private broadcaster Hitradio alleged that the bomb formed parts of plans to attack a bicycle race set for Friday in the western German city Frankfurt.

Forensic experts spent the day combing the apartment in Oberursel, which lies near Frankfurt.

Germany's daily Die Welt said those arrested were a couple, who had been under police observation after using a false name when they purchased an unusually large amount of hydrogen peroxide at a Frankfurt hardware store in late March.
