London - Billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed made a fresh application to the Scottish courts on Monday for a public inquiry into the deaths of Princess Diana and his son, Dodi, in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997.
Al-Fayed is appealing a decision by Scotland's senior law officer, the Lord Advocate, to turn down his earlier application for an inquiry.
The Egyptian-born owner of Harrods department store in London maintains the accident was plotted by people who disapproved of Diana dating his son.
He has contested French court findings exonerating photographers who chased the couple's car from responsibility for the crash.
The hearing at Edinburgh's Court of Session is expected to last five days.
