Mom drives off with baby on roof

2012-06-03 13:05

Phoenix - A marijuana-smoking woman was arrested on Saturday in Phoenix after she accidentally drove away with her five-week-old son in a child safety seat on the roof of her vehicle, police said.

The baby fell off the car in the middle of an intersection and was found unharmed and strapped into the seat, said Phoenix police spokesperson James Holmes.

The mother Catalina Clouser, 19, was booked into jail on child abuse and aggravated assault charges, he said. The infant was taken to a local hospital as a precaution and is in the custody of state Child Protective Services.

"It appears the suspect put the baby on the roof of the car and drove off, forgetting he was still on the roof," Holmes said in a written statement.

Police said Clouser and her boyfriend had been smoking marijuana in a park and left with the toddler to buy beer late on Friday night. Officers stopped the car and the boyfriend was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence while driving with the baby in the 2000 Ford Focus.

Police learned that Clouser was so upset about the arrest that she drove to a friend's home and "admittedly smoked one or two additional bowls of marijuana," Holmes said.

She left at about midnight with the baby asleep in the car seat, placing the child on top of the vehicle, he said. Clouser apparently did not realise that the baby was missing until she arrived home.

Holmes said witnesses who were friends of the mother advised officers that the child belonged to Clouser. The mother then arrived at the scene and "made admissions to what had occurred."

      trevor.akal - 2012-06-03 14:20

HAHAHA Berthram that comment made my day! People are so sensitive these days...

  • Garth - 2012-06-03 13:59

Darwin could totally explain how it happened and more importantly why it happened! Some genes just don't deserve to swim in the great pool with the others!

  • Hermann - 2012-06-03 14:25

And "dagga" is harmless! Convince me Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. We know damn well why they went there. Water is at the bottom of the hill.

      stuart.steedman - 2012-06-03 15:03

What ... what are you smoking?

      pearson.botha - 2012-06-03 20:03

Dagga is harmless. Stupid people are dangerous

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-06-04 09:37

Far worse things occur with people not high at all ,I can then say that not taking drugs is dangerous (following the logic). Not to take away from the gross negligence of this foolish women.

      Buzz - 2012-06-05 11:54

And the Big Bad Wolf was actually after Little Red's stash. What's your point?

      adrian.strydom - 2012-06-05 13:54

@pearson.botha...and dagga in the hands of stupid people is deadly..light another spliff my friend and keep fooling yourself.

      Buzz - 2012-06-05 15:09

@ Adrian: Lol. The common denominator is stupid people, yet you imply that dagga somehow makes them "deadly". Ruuuuuuun for the hills, it's the Green Gevaar! haha

  • Zahir - 2012-06-03 14:33

The baby was ok so what is the issue?

      fdalana - 2012-06-03 17:59

      his/her mother is a crackhead.

      mrp721 - 2012-06-03 19:49

The issue is that this "mother" was negligent due to a stupid addiction you clown, a 5 week old baby could have died because his mother was too selfish to put her baby's needs before her own that is the issue you chop!

      Buzz - 2012-06-05 11:58

@mrp721: So many variables in this, yet grass is the sole one you blame. No words for someome with such singular thinking.

  • Cassandra Eileen Olivier - 2012-06-03 15:01

Parents like that don't deserve to have children i hope that child gets a new home

      trevor.akal - 2012-06-03 15:04

I'm sorry but i'd much rather have a useless mother, than foster parents, pretty sure i'm not the only one!

      Buzz - 2012-06-05 15:02

@Adrian: I think you've missed the point and the vibe of the comment. But hey, thank you for generalising us "dope heads" and showing such a strong command of the Queen's english. Do black people also all look the same to you?

  • erika.tolken - 2012-06-03 16:13

I know my dad regularly drove off with his cup of coffee (sometimes along with the wallet and cellphone too) on the roof of his car. And he did not even smoke marijuana. :) Ok - before I get "stoned" - terrible thing to have happened and so glad the baby is ok.

      Dee - 2012-06-05 14:06

Actually ... I cannot see the word Arizona? The bottom of article references 'US' so is Phoenix, Arizona. but Ryno .... I may be shortsighted, but your 'moron' response indicates you'r horrible. Kheta and I can get spectacles for our problem. Do you have a cure for your personality problem?

I can understand if this mom had post pardon but she's a drugie and what ever the stone heads say that its not a drug then tel me y do you get high point made anyway this women should loose her kid a kid is not a cup of coffee you just forget on a roof how did she not see the kid fly of the roof yea she was stoned out of her head!

      Buzz - 2012-06-05 11:42

OMG, are you for real? You are standing on your steel reinforced soap box criticising people who smoke grass and generalising that they are druggies. I guess that's just the world we live in. One where people who are completely blind to their own glaringly obvious artery clogging vices have no problem labelling others for their ingestion of a substance safer than your next cheese burger. P.S. To answer your question, people get high for the same reason that you proably eat more than you need to... it makes them happy.

      KingRudeboy - 2012-06-05 12:03

Sorry Brendene, but you are an idiot. Learn to spell, learn to use punctuation, and learn to get your facts straight before making dumb comments.

      sashairla - 2012-06-05 12:34

Brendene. You're obese and have an addiction to food. Hypocrite.

      Matthew - 2012-06-05 13:43

Its not anything other than her own fault, quite similarly to your obesity. I bet you shift the blame same as she does by being "big boned" or having a "problem" but truth be told you are greedy and therefore over indulge. This was a simple mistake by a drunk, stressed out teenage mom in over her head. The extra marijuana that she smoked wasn't necessary or clever, but it was a coping method because not all of us deal with our issues by excessive consumption of food products. Don't insult something so oddly close to home. Marijuana is a part of life these days, so instead of judging, embrace the culture, why don't you try some, then try judge the community on one idiot. Just try avoid the permanent "munchies"

  • xhatelutho - 2012-06-04 09:57

I could imagine how high she was to even forget a child on top of the car.

      Buzz - 2012-06-05 11:50

High? Stupid? Tired? Drunk? Forgetful? Honest mistake? Young? All of the above? So many variables, but glad to see that your vast wisdom encompasses them all and comes to the convenient conclusion.

  • Buzz - 2012-06-05 11:13

Of all the factors marijuana is the one they single out, so let's play the subtraction game: no car = no incident no teen pregancy = no incident no beer = no incident Sure, scorching a few extra bowls before driving off with her baby was not the best idea. But let's call this what it is... A silver medal in the Darwin awards. Would be great if people stopped blaming human failings on everything other than humans. Even better if the stupidity or mistake of one toker is not used as a generalization for all tokers.

  • Christopher - 2012-06-05 11:25

and noooooooooooooow.............. let the legalization debate begin! Remember, the fact that she was stoned is highlighted, I'm sure there are millions of cases just like this where mothers/fathers have been under the influence of prescription drugs/alcohol. We shouldnt judge the whole debate on this one story, everything has a good and bad side to it!

      Buzz - 2012-06-05 12:05

Agreed Christopher, so many facors and we get a story like this. Grass could of have had a role to play, but all other factors are forsaken for a juicy theme to the story.

      jeremy.acton - 2012-06-05 12:20

      Well said, Christopher.

  • Christopher - 2012-06-05 11:31

Please tell me you've never left something on the roof of your car... without being stoned! She forgot, as many do! stoned or not it happened.... a teen mother and drinking, i think the problems where there years ago!

      celeste.gorman.3 - 2012-06-05 11:51

I agree, I have left things on the top of my car WITHOUT being stoned! Funny how people forget the fact that she was ALSO drinking, and only remember the fact that she was smoking pot!!!! Because of one persons stupidity, all pot smokers are now druggies!!!!Its ridiculous!

  • Rev.AsianWill - 2012-06-05 12:08

when will we stop blaming the substance and blame the person......they try to focus on the cannabis....but the simple fact is the mother should not be a mother ...i mean come on she was riding around all day with the father who got arrested for a dui that very day...red flag right there that the mother aint right in the head ....and i wonder what effected her more the cannabis or her being sleep deprived ......a new born will keep parents up...add in that mother went to a friends house to midnight....hell iam shock the kid is ok and the mother has not been hit with neglect before this

  • jeremy.acton - 2012-06-05 12:10

I actually feel very sorry for this lady, and this could also happen to anyone in a stressful situation. Her mistake was to put the childseat on the roof, which is just asking for forgetfulness. Remember the young father who left his baby in the car in Cape Town and it died? He wasn't stoned and it happened. I just hope that society could reunite mother and baby here, even if she pays fines, or is under supervision. That would heal this disaster, and this mother has ALREADY learned her lesson, I am sure.

      Diana - 2012-06-05 14:01

What kind of stressful situation? This (w)itch was high on dope! God how loaded you must be that you put a baby seat on top of your car not inside.

  • Bomi Shinga - 2014-02-04 11:03

Who put a baby car seat on a car roof? she must have been nigh

      Ester Le Grange - 2014-02-05 19:03

Bomi,I suggest that you websearch the term"peuperium"The peroid 5-6 weeks after birth. The mother may be emotionally unstable or even psychotic,This woman's condition was exacebated by her substance abuse
