New York - A fire briefly broke out early Wednesday on the 88th floor of New York's World Trade Centre skyscraper, built to replace the destroyed Twin Towers.

The fire at One World Trade Centre began just as rush hour got underway, but was quickly tamed, a spokesperson for the New York fire department told AFP.

"It's near under control," the spokesperson said less than an hour after the emergency started.

A total of 84 firefighters from 26 units were dispatched to the glimmering, glass-clad tower which rises to 104 floors. There were no injuries.

The tower, briefly dubbed Freedom Tower, but often referred to also as 1 WTC is the lynchpin of the reconstruction project in lower Manhattan where nearly 3 000 people died during the 11 September 2001 attacks on the Twin Towers.
