New tsunami alert for aftershock

2012-04-11 13:26

Banda Aceh - Indonesia has issued a fresh tsunami warning after an aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 8.2 shook its western coast.

The first 8.6-magnitude quake off Aceh province, hours earlier, spawned a wave around 80cm high but caused no serious damage.

The US Geological Survey said the strong temblor that followed was centred 16km beneath the ocean around 615km from the provincial capital, Banda Aceh.

Harjadi, a local official who goes by only one name, said the new tsunami warning was for residents living along the western coast of the country.

It included Sumatra island and the Mentawai islands.

      Rudi - 2012-04-11 13:43

Harjadi? Now his name is Harjadi? I thought his name was Said! This is confusing me. Anyway, 80cm sounds like the waves the beginners surf on at J-Bay. All this hoo hah about 80cm... Where is my Juju? At least he makes it interesting!

      Raymond - 2012-04-11 13:52

Rudi, I'm sure that's what they Said.

Apparently the 2004 tsunami disaster started off with a 30cm wave in deep water. So u can imagine the wave of 80cm. Also the wave increases as it gets closer to land.

      John - 2012-04-11 16:34

No, this 80cm monstrosity hit the shore at that size, wreaking havoc and sticking it to the man.

      @John- Thats f@cking hilarious! Zoolander!

      Good luck!

      Marion - 2012-04-11 14:46

Hoping that the 8.6er is the quake and not just a foreshock. That 'aftershock' was incredibly strong too.

how true is it that a Tsunami may hit South Afica?

      dewaldvn - 2012-04-11 17:05

@Jean Ingram...yes we can be affected. This type of energy travels through waves and boy do we have a lot of water surrounding us!

  • Jayson - 2012-04-11 14:03

My three year old was totally intent on telling me about this tsunami. But he kept calling it a Salami. Hence I had a good chuckle cause this wave was about the size of a salami. Let's pray to God that it doesn't get worse.

      dewaldvn - 2012-04-11 17:06

      whahahahhahaaa!!! awesome...gottal love kids!!

80 cm is the measurement from crest to crest of a wave and that is deep sea. when the wave pushes against the ocean floor as it heads towards land that size will dramatically increase by 2-4 times the size measured at the deap sea point so its something to worry about.

      Marion - 2012-04-11 14:48

That is scary. They keep saying nothing to worry about. I heard that there was approximately 7 inch wave out at sea.

I just saw a video of the tsunami wave that struck today on YouTube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vsu9-vEaHbo&sns=em

      Raymond - 2012-04-11 14:48

Why would people stick around to film this thing? Crazy.

      Marion - 2012-04-11 14:52

Surely that is a video from the 2004 tsunami? There appears to be a second wave coming in (see 48 secs into the tape).

      ziyaad.dharsey - 2012-04-11 14:55

thats actually quite an old clip that was just renamed. sorry Didi

  • Jayson - 2012-04-11 15:16

News24 please clarify was the wave 80cm when it spawned and moved toward land. Or was it 80cm when it hit land. It was stated that no serious damage was done. So I gather it did hit land at 80cm high. Just a question.

The quake was a strike-slip rather than a normal fault (plates moving side to side rather than thrusting up) so unlikely to cause a tsunami. That news doesn't garner as many hits as warning of an impending disaster of course.
