Obama takes delegate lead

Washington - Barack Obama took the lead in the race for Democratic convention delegates for the first time, moving ahead of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Obama got a boost from newly released results from Saturday's Washington state caucus, and he extended it with overwhelming wins on Tuesday in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC.

Obama won at least 51 delegates in Tuesday's primaries, with 93 still to be awarded. Clinton won at least 24.

Obama won 52 of Washington state's 78 delegates, according to caucus results released by the state party Tuesday night. Clinton won 26.

In the overall race for the nomination, Obama had 1 212, including separately chosen party and elected officials known as superdelegates. Clinton had 1 191.

It will take 2 025 delegates to secure the Democratic nomination at the party's national convention this August in Denver.

Republican Senator John McCain picked up all 60 delegates from winning the Virginia primary. A total of 113 Republican delegates were at stake in Republican primaries in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC.

Overall, McCain had 789 delegates and former Arkansas Gov Mike Huckabee had 241.

It will take 1 191 delegates to secure the Republican nomination.

The AP tracks the delegate races by projecting the number of national convention delegates won by candidates in each presidential primary or caucus, based on state and national party rules, and by interviewing unpledged delegates to obtain their preferences.

In some states, like Iowa and Nevada, local precinct caucuses are the first stage in the allocation process. The AP uses preferences expressed in those caucuses to project the number of national convention delegates each candidate will have when they are chosen at county, congressional district or state conventions.

Fred says... Pierre, this is more stupidity. Nato did not destroy Libya. It intervened at the behest of the Arab League and United Nations and in so doing sugically targeted military and other institutional installations to weaken Gaddafi's ability to destroy the country and kill many more thousands of people. The United Nations instructed Nato to do this, rightly so or there would have been tens of thousands more deaths, untold destruction, torture and rape by a mad, almost psychotic man. It is stupid not to draw these distinctions. I do agree with you that military action should be used as a last resort. This is exactly what happened in Libya. It is stupid to miss this. Countries that have been hijacked by a small group of people who then use its resources largely for their own gain and kill, torutre, and maim their populations to hold onto power are not truly sovereign. It is stupid to allow them to hide behind this label. Read the article...
