Obama to meet 9/11 families

2011-05-03 08:23
Washington - US President Barack Obama is expected to meet with family members of the victims of the September 11 2001, terrorist attacks on Thursday, according to media reports.

The meeting will come four days after Obama revealed that the US had killed the main culprit in the deaths, al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Obama's meeting is to take place at Ground Zero in Manhattan, site of the terrorist attacks that destroyed the two World Trade Centre buildings that day and killed more than 2 600 people.

Obama revealed late on Sunday that a US operation had killed bin Laden, who orchestrated the hijacking of four airplanes that day, two of which were flown into the twin towers. A third aircraft was flown into the Pentagon and the fourth was apparently commandeered by passengers who forced its crash in Pennsylvania.

All told, nearly 3 000 people were killed in the attacks.

Bin Laden is also held responsible for multiple international lethal terrorist attacks, including the 1998 twin attacks on US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
