Washington - Republicans were taking aim at the Obama administration's handling of its crippled health insurance website as Congress began hearings on Thursday to examine why many consumers have been unable to sign up for new online markets, a key part of President Barack Obama's signature health care overhaul.

Thursday's hearing was focusing on the contractors who built the federal government's website and say the Obama administration shares responsibility for the snags that have crippled the system.

The troubled rollout of what's known as Obamacare has re-invigorated Republicans who failed in their drive to defund the programme by shutting down the government.

Republicans were calling for the law to be suspended until its problems are fixed.

Democrats acknowledged the website's problems but defended the law, saying millions of uninsured Americans are counting on it to finally get coverage - and thousands are succeeding in signing up. They accused Republicans of trying to sabotage the law, not to fix it.
