Sarajevo - The head of the International Commission on Missing Persons says that searching and finding the estimated 50 000 people that went missing during the conflict in Syria must be the country's priority once the fighting is over.

Kathryn Bomberger said on Tuesday that otherwise Syria will never achieve peace and stability.

The Sarajevo-based ICMP has grown into a repository for expertise on using DNA to identify missing people. The organisation is currently working in the Balkans, Iraq, Libya, Cyprus, Chile and El Salvador as well as helping Interpol identify victims of the recent Westgate Mall terror attack in Kenya.

The commission was formed in Bosnia in 1996, and developed programmes to help in the search for 30 000 people missing after the country's 1992-1995 war.
