Outcry after Israeli bombs kill 4 boys in Gaza

2014-07-17 13:16
Cape Town – As Israel and Hamas agree to a UN-requested truce for humanitarian purposes, one Gaza family is reeling after the deaths of four of their children.

On the 10th day of Israel's "Operation Protective Edge" the Palestinian death toll reportedly stands at 226 with 1 678 people wounded.

The brutal killing of four Palestinian boys from Israeli shelling on a beach in Gaza has sparked international outcry, as Israel buried its first victim of the conflict.

BBC News reports that the children were all related and playing on the seafront outside a hotel used by foreign journalists.

Al Jazeera correspondent, Stefanie Dekker, tweeted a picture of the strike showing the four boys running across the beach as dust rose from a nearby shell.

A BBC News video shows the boys running for cover before being struck by a loud explosion. The charred and disfigured bodies are described as too gruesome to show.

The aftermath is shown in the following images:

The UN relief agency for Palestine has called the air strike another “tragic illustration” of the extent to which civilians are suffering in this "appalling conflict".

According to the UN more than three quarters of Palestinians killed in the Israeli offensive have been civilians, including 44 children.

Israel buries first casualty

In the Israeli city of Yehud weeping mourners buried the first Israeli to be killed in the 10-day conflict.

The DailyMail reports that the 37-year-old civilian was fatally wounded after he was sprayed with shrapnel from a mortar that exploded near the vehicle he was travelling in at the Gaza border.
