Taipei - Two men arrested over an incident in which two suitcases loaded with petrol were planted on a high-speed train in Taiwan have been released without charge, police said on Monday.

The duo, who are brothers identified only by their surname Lai, were arrested at their home in central Taichung city on Sunday but were released early Monday morning after questioning, police said.

A police officer, who asked not to be named, said the pair had been ruled out as possible suspects.

Interior Minister Lee Hong-yuan said he expected further arrests soon.

"My understanding is that police have collected sufficient information on the suspects. The police should be able to catch them soon," Lee told reporters.

The incident happened on Friday when the two unattended suitcases were found on board a train bound for the capital Taipei, prompting the evacuation of more than 600 passengers.

Two other suitcases, also containing petrol, were found in lawmaker Lu Chia-chen's office in New Taipei city. Lu cited Lee as saying that the two incidents were being treated as connected.

After discovering the two suitcases on the train, rail operator Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. evacuated passengers at Taoyuan station near Taipei and police removed the bags for investigation.

Officers searched the train for evidence and the platform for Taipei-bound trains was temporarily closed during the removal of the suitcases, the company said.

It said it had not received any threats prior to the incident.
