Islamabad - Airstrikes by Pakistani security forces killed at least 25 militants on Monday in the troubled northwestern tribal region on the Afghan border, security officials said.

The latest attacks targeted militants in the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan, one of seven tribal districts.

The strikes destroyed four hideouts of Taliban militants, "killing 25 militants and injuring 10 more", a security official said on condition of anonymity.

The identity of those killed was not immediately known.

The information could not be verified through independent sources because the area is out of reach of the media.

The latest strikes were launched as a council of local elders or jirga was preparing to hold peace talks with militants from the Mehsud tribe, who are a strong component of the Taliban.

Another security official said Ikramuddin, the father-in-law of slain Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud, is heading the jirga and it would try to arrange peace with the powerful Taliban factions of Khan Said Sajna and Shehryar Mehsud.

Baituallh Mehsud was killed in a US drone attack in 2009.

The army launched an operation in North Waziristan in June and says it has killed more than 1 100 militants so far.
