Panetta condemns corpse urinating video

2012-01-12 17:32

Washington - US defence secretary Leon Panetta on Thursday condemned a video that apparently shows US Marines urinating on the corpses of Afghan men, promising to punish those involved.

"I have seen the footage and I find the behaviour depicted in it utterly deplorable," Panetta said in a statement, saying he had ordered the Marine Corps and the commander of US and Nato troops in Afghanistan to investigate the incident.

"Those found to have engaged in such conduct will be held accountable to the fullest extent," he said.

The video that surfaced a day earlier appeared to show American forces urinating on the bodies of dead Taliban fighters could aggravate anti-American sentiment in Afghanistan as the Obama administration hopes to end a decade-long war.

      Mike - 2012-01-12 18:33

I wonder whether Bin-Laden did the same on 9/11? Or whether the Taliban did the same to US troops? (Sorry, video not available to the West!)

Lordwick. Sorry, not sure if you're being sarcastic with your grammar. If not, your comment just shows your level of education and you should not be airing your views. If you are, I apologise

This must be deeply embarrasing for the Obama administration. Rest assured these guys are screwed, their career in the military over.

      Mark - 2012-01-12 19:29

  • Shirley - 2012-01-12 18:55

Dawood: Im the scum of the earth? Why? The Taliban publicly behead people[on tv]and I wonder how those victims families feel?? What indoctrination...? To be respected you have to earn it and they certainly havent! I wonder what kind of stress levels those american soldiers have after wondering every second when they are going to be blown up? A lot of ugly things happen in war-they were just filmed! As for the filth bit..we know whos side you are on!

      John - 2012-01-12 19:16

I'm here in Afghanistan. I'm South African. You have no idea of the danger these US idiots have put all of us in. Do the Yanks really have to stoop to the depraved, radical level that the Taliban goes to? You don't earn respect by upping the ante. You earn respect by responding firmly, even killing if necessary. What these Yanks did is taunting and provoking the Taliban. Somebody has to break the cycle of violence. These Yanks are no more "right" or civilized than the enemy. They are equally depraved. We are all stressed, nervous etc. No need to be macho. Just be professional.

      Mark - 2012-01-12 19:35

Sies. To be born should earn you automatic respect for being alive and for making the choices given to yourself. And also the respect to die as your choices led you to where you are. For someone else to take the dignity away by choice, well now!

      Juan - 2012-01-12 19:56

Professionalism that is the key. These soldiers were totally unprofessional. @John there are a great many professional Americans out there. These guys were the exception, rather than the rule

  • Mark - 2012-01-12 19:25

Now I've officially seen EVERYTHING! Now I know for certainty that there is something seriously sick about the human race! left, right and centre even north and south. Change is is coming! welcome to 2012

There are the older men who start the wars in the world and the younger men are sent to fight them. The 18 / 19 year old youngsters are trained into unfeeling killers and hate the 'enemy', and then when they do what they are trained to do the sanctimonious old bastards want to punish them for what they were trained to do,and shun them when they get home. This happens all over the world, whether it be the USA, SA or Palistine/Israel, it doesn't matter whether your name is Bush, Blair, Obama, or P.W Botha, you've f**cked up enough young lives. Not to mentioned your interfering involvement in Vietnam, South West Africa, Cambodia, pick a country, in the past I would have pissed on the 'enemy' as defined by the warmongers to. Now I'd just piss on them. F*ck you old men, bring the young soldiers home and treat them with dignity.

The arabs towed the bodies of Black Hawk down soldiers around town in Somalia, there was no uproar about that.

      Brendan - 2012-01-12 21:32

Somalians towed the bodies of the 'BLack hawk down' soldiers around town in Somalia, and there was an uproar.

  • Brendan - 2012-01-12 19:55

John is right. Whether the US should be there is another discussion but the fact is they are there and this purile behaviour will incite, nothing more there is no excuse or justification for it. Especially the playground mentality 'that they did it as well' -Shirley. I too was in Afghanistan and stuff like this just fuels hatred.

Has this politician ever been in combat? Those with the negative comments, have you? Doubtful. Combat changes a man, exposing that absolute base behavioral traits that strips away the veneer of civilization we put on every day. After a while we forget what it is like back home in a "protected" environment and adapt to living in constant danger. Once home, after every deployment, it takes a while to "normalize" If you have not experienced combat, you will probably have no idea what I am talking about. War is UGLY. At least today there are programs for formal military veterans coming back from combat situations (PMCs have to pay for their own)

  • bennie.wessels - 2012-01-12 22:17

Utterly deplorable but what do you expect from young boys sent to an area to fight in a war they don't understand and in which they have a good chance to die.

      Stewart - 2012-01-12 22:30

what the hell are they doing in another man's country.tell them to get the hell out. american economy is based on war
