Manila - Police are investigating the involvement of a US Marine in the death of a transgender person in the northern Philippines, officials said on Monday.

The body of the 26-year-old victim was found in a hotel room in Olongapo City, 80km south of Manila, on Saturday evening, a police report said.

He was believed to have been strangled, it said.

Witnesses told police that they saw the victim check in at the hotel room with an unidentified American man, police said.

The US embassy in Manila confirmed that a "US Marine has been identified as a possible suspect in the ongoing investigation".

"The United States will continue to fully co-operate with Philippine law enforcement authorities in every aspect of the investigation," it said.

The suspect has been taken into custody on board the amphibious assault ship Peleliu, according to the Marine Corps Times, quoting an internal Navy memo.

Three other Marines have also been detained as potential witnesses, it said.

The Marines were assigned to an infantry unit in the Philippines to take part in joint training exercises, the newspaper said.
