New York - A Somali man has pleaded guilty on Tuesday in New York to seizing a US ship in the Indian Ocean in 2009, but will escape life imprisonment after prosecutors dropped a formal piracy charge.

Abduwali Abdukhadir Muse was captured by the US Navy in a bloody operation on the high seas last year to free a US merchant captain that he and other assailants were holding hostage.

He pleaded guilty in federal court in Manhattan to seizing a ship by force and kidnapping, but prosecutors said they would no longer pursue him for piracy and other more serious charges.
