Hong Kong - China's state news agency said on Friday that the police chief of the Chinese "sex capital" Dongguan had been sacked following media exposure of rampant prostitution in the city.

Yan Xiaokang, vice mayor of Dongguan and head of its Public Security Bureau, was removed from his posts after his "dereliction of duty" fuelled the underground sex trade and seedy image of the city in southern Guangdong province, Xinhua reported.

"Yan's dereliction of duty led to the persistent illegal sex trade in Dongguan, which has reflected very badly on the city, both domestically and internationally," Xinhua reported, citing a statement from the Communist Party's provincial committee in Guangdong.

Another seven officials in the city were sacked in relation to the case, it said.

Yan's sacking came after an expose by China's state broadcaster on prostitution in the Chinese "sex capital" last week triggered a huge police operation.

More than 6 000 police officers swept through hundreds of hotels, saunas and karaoke parlours in the city, arresting 67 people, shuttering 12 venues and suspending two police chiefs, state media reported.
