Police strike ends in Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro - A police strike in Rio de Janeiro has ended just days
before the city explodes in chaos for the world's biggest Carnival bash.
Union officials for the police, firefighters and prison guards who called
the strike last week say it ended in a Monday vote.
The strike was called to much fanfare in a large rally in Rio's center. But
it never effected security in the city, the number of officers who adhered to
it appeared small and authorities never had to call on army soldiers to patrol
The end to the Rio strike comes after this weekend's end to a similar strike
in the northeastern state of Bahia.
That strike saw homicides in the state capital of Salvador more than double
during the work stoppage.
