Skopje - Macedonia's four main political leaders are to resume talks in attempt to carve out a way to resolve a crisis that has roiled the country for months.

Monday's meeting, organised by Western diplomats, will be attended by conservative Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, main opposition Social Democrat head Zoran Zaev and two ethnic Albanian political leaders: Ali Ahmeti, heading a junior governing coalition partner and Menduh Thaci, leader of an opposition party.

Macedonia faces one of its deepest political crises since gaining independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, stemming from opposition claims that the government illegally wiretapped 20 000 people.

On Sunday, tens of thousands of people attended an anti-government protest outside the government building.

Many have vowed to remain, demanding Gruevski's resignation. A pro-government demonstration has been called for Monday evening.
